Dumb question about gliders vs planes... maybe

As with anything in aviation things are a tradeoff. Long wings are efficient, but more difficult to design structually. Also while the induced drag is lower you usually have higher parasitic drag. Long wings are a paint on the ground as well. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect_ratio_(aeronautics)

    Lycoming SB 632 - a disaster?

In this case it is a manufacturing issue as far as I can tell. Con rod ends/bushings not properly sized. At least on Lyc new/rebuilt engines they are paying for labor. On third party OH, it looks like you get a free $5 bushing...

    Lycoming SB 632 - a disaster?

Yeah I expect we're gonna get screwed by this. We recently bought a plane with a December 2015 overhauled engine at Zephyr Aircraft Engines. They used the "quality" Lycoming parts (only ****ed at Lyc. I have no issues with Zephyr as they used these parts in good faith), so I expect to have to do...

    All things Cirrus

Well there are really two Cirri... The Open Cirrus with a 17.74m wingspan was first built by Shempp-Hirth in 1967. This was Klaus Holinghaus' first design for them. It has a very roomy cockpit, but uses an older high list airfoil, that has good low speed characteristics, but drops off rapidly...

    When Dreams Collide

Ted, you can basically get half your winch run in launch altitude with proper procedure. So with 3000' of cable payed out you can make it to about 1500' real easy. More cable, or more headwind, and you can increase the altitude. So figure 1500-2000' on a decent winch launch. Granted, you don't...

    When Dreams Collide

There may have been a contest at the time. Not so sure about the soaring down there, but judging by the number of clubs it can't be that bad. Here is a list of clubs in Germany. You should be able to find a local aeroclub pretty easily. Most of their club fleets are pretty high end compared to...

    When Dreams Collide

Where are you headed in Germany? As Ted mentioned there are a ton of Soaring clubs over there. Power flying is pretty damn pricey, but is doable.

Aircraft Valuation other than AOPA Vref

My club is in the process of looking for a new to us Archer, and we've been using the "free" AOPA Vref calcs to get a basic idea of aircraft values. Is there any other option out there short of paying for a full Vref or blue book subscription? The free AOPA calculator is pretty terrible. It...

    Anyone Still Use Airnav?

I don't rely too much on the FBO reviews. When $ignature at KMDW has only ONE positive review (out of one reviews in total), I question the usefulness of the reviews.
