Buckeye Arizona Air Fair and AOPA Fly-in Feb. 17-19, 2023

It's great to see how supportive the City of Buckeye (fastest growing city in the country) is to its airport and general aviation.

Buckeye Arizona Air Fair and AOPA Fly-in Feb. 17-19, 2023

Went there today with my wife, son and granddaughter. Lots to do and tons of food options. The aerial performances were terrific, despite the 20-knot, 90° crosswind.

    Age?

20 years ago I bought a K35 Bonanza from an octogenarian whose wife wanted him to quit flying. When I gave him the deposit check he said, "Now I want you to know, if anything happens to my wife before the deal closes, I'm keeping the airplane." He wasn't smiling.

Aircraft ownership rush to Exit door

I took this photo in 1966, of a '51 C-170A panel -- original except for the "modern" Superhomer. :D

    Another ‘Cherokee 180 vs. 235’ thread…

I believe the 12,000' number. But I would doubt the 13,550' quoted for the 1974-77 models (gross weight, ISA, etc., etc.) It wouldn't surprise me if the sudden and otherwise unexplainable increase were driven by the marketing department, smarting from hearing about the competitor C-182P's...

    Another ‘Cherokee 180 vs. 235’ thread…

Piper quoted service ceiling of 12,000' for the 1973 Cherokee Charger, and 13,550' for the 1974 Cherokee Pathfinder. I'm suspicious of that, though. There was no difference between them other than the name, the paint job and the shape of the windows -- not enough to account for another 1,550...

    Another ‘Cherokee 180 vs. 235’ thread…

The 1973 redesign in the -180 and -235 (1972 for the Arrow) involved not only the longer fuselage, but also more wingspan (in the -180 and Arrow only, matching the -235's 32' wingspan), longer stabilator and more weight. Stands to reason that performance would be degraded somewhat, but the...

Cirrus Driver opts to NOT become smoking hole - NO chute pop

I live 4 nm northwest of the aircraft's location here This photo was taken ten minutes after Rusty's screenshot above. This is the hail that was falling on us at that moment. Bizjets on the approach control frequency were reporting severe turbulence, "lightning everywhere" and saying...

Likewise. I've had a Canon B&W laser printer for six years now and it's been reliable and efficient.

    My favorite gauge

Mine just tells me how bad my landings are. I heard that a former American Champion employee said that airframes shipped by boat overseas would arrive with G meters showing 7 or 8 Gs. Rough trip!

    Air-to-Air Cessna 177RG

    Yes - like the other single-engine Cessna retracts, 172RG, R182 and 210. T-38, a relative of the F-5.

I'd never even noticed the reflection in the camera ship canopy. They composed the cover well so it looked natural.

    Super Bowl traffic

Three and a half hours before the game, and two and a half hours before the TFR takes effect. There are five Super Cubs and two C-150s orbiting the stadium right now, all registered to aerial advertising companies.

Ernest Gann Fate is the Hunter

Weekend Pilot, more than any other single book, inspired my interest in flying. First published in 1957, it's now a fascinating glimpse of a bygone era of general aviation. Smith went on to become general aviation's greatest advocate and cheerleader in Washington DC. His books trace his...

Ernest Gann Fate is the Hunter

His novel The High And The Mighty is of course very good too. But I think Island in The Sky was a better movie than was H&M. Both of those novels were inspired by incidents described in Fate Is The Hunter.
