CPL stuff: Private, Non-common, common carriage ... oof

On the subject of the pilot’s responsibility to know what’s happening… On September 25, 2024, the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals published a decision which discusses illegal charter operations. It reaffirms that "holding out" can be based on reputation alone, that "compensation" does not mean...

    Cleared Bridge 9 Arrival?

That’s not a procedure for “descend via” either. Among other things, no mandatory altitudes. Published MEAs are not altitude restrictions.

    It's official... BasicMed expanded

I'm looking forward to the answer. I'd be surprised if they cared, or even knew the various FAA medical requirements for different operations.

Long Cross country 51.8nm straight line without landing at airport?

Maybe but not that likely. This was probably more than 20 years ago. And something the FAA has repeated several times. At this point, sounds more like DPEs making up their own rules rather than the FAA's.

Moving from Class III to Class II with SI?

Don't need any more than BasicMed to get your commercial certificate in a "covered aircraft." Third Class if an FAA medical is required.

Long Cross country 51.8nm straight line without landing at airport?

Anyone else remember the time the Buffalo FSDO put something up on their website saying that all legs of a cross country had to be >50 NM in order to count? It was mentioned in a thread, I think in the old AOPA forums. A number wrote into the Chief Counsel's office and the page disappeared in...

    New PPL

When I was doing primary training, I would have my student’s partner join us for a flight. It accomplished several things. The different feel for the pilot with the change in balance is one. Developing confidence for the passenger so they would feel comfortable flying with their partner later...

Long Cross country 51.8nm straight line without landing at airport?

They need retraining. I guess they think the “one segment” language has no meaning.

Long Cross country 51.8nm straight line without landing at airport?

As soon as you say “no landing” it’s a red flag there is a problem. But… We often see questions here about whether a particular route satisfies the requirements. Telling us the actual route is so much more helpful than trying to parse a word salad that may be missing some croutons.

You are right. The considerations are different in a number of respects. I assume you are asking about the "rest of the story" from mine. I'll try to keep it short. It's probably more interesting to lawyers than anyone else. It started out pretty normally. My client was selling his airplane...

Agree on all three, although "no longer existing" can be problematic. I wish I still had the information on my "favorite" one, but the defunct bank had gone through multiple mergers and asset transfers. So the bank was definitely defunct, but the holder of the loan was alive and well (and BIG)...

    Lien Issue

It's not common but it happens. It even happens with real estate title insurance. I've seen far worse situations than we are discussing here. If the lienholder can be contacted for a payoff/release, the title company will insist on release unless the buyer (with the consent of the buyer's...

That's it I am getting my clearances on the ground

Time marches on. Many have been decommissioned. At some point they will be go away of the National CD number, Flight Watch, DUAT. The one at my home base no longer appears in the AFD. Looking briefly at the Southeast Chart Supplement, looks like about 30 left in that region. The standard...

How is 5W5 Triple W in Raleigh, NC?

BTW, if you are looking at JNX, there's a decent BBQ restaurant on the field. That's good but it also means parking can be a problem. Especially since there is a large Part 141 training operation (Blue Line) which has pretty much taken over the airport. I admit to a bias since I'm based at...

    Android Pilots guidance

I have tried a number of tablets though the years but have never been disappointed by the performance of a Samsung. The biggest "knock" on Android - the one the Apple zealots point to and some EFB talk about as their excuse - is the variability of the open structure of the platform. That's not...

That's it I am getting my clearances on the ground

How long is “always?” :D I think you are recalling a “Remote Communications Outlet” (radio to radio) but are describing a “Ground Communications Outlet” (radio to telephone). 4 mic clicks to dial ATC. 6 to dial FSS. If I recall correctly, the publication of TRACON/Center numbers didn’t start...

You can make the same seatbelt argument about weight and balance. Since filling all the seats would make the airplane overweight, only enough seats as would keep the airplane within weight limits with the minimum fuel required for the flight is "authorized." My WAG is that a court faced with...

Can a CFII instruct with Basicmed instead of an FAA medical?

That’s about it. I’ve been instructing with BasicMed for about 6 years now. It’s actually written into the regulations. 61.23(c)(1)(vii). Exercising the privileges of a flight instructor certificate and acting as the pilot in command or as a required flight crewmember if the flight is conducted...
