    Operation El Dorado Canyon

Story of our entire service history (at least the flying part). I remember flying for a month over Iraq completely unarmed (unless you want to count my service 9mm), watching ISIS kill hundreds of civilians via ATFLIR. Guess what? We got bombs as soon as AF tactical units arrived in theater...

FAA: Pilots should be capable of flying aircraft manually when needed

I'm pretty new to this world where I don't have to single pilot hand fly every single approach (or basically the entire flight for that matter, with no FDs/magenta/FMS/guidance), but what I have gathered is that there is a time and a place for automation. Like how am I gonna eat my damn meal...

    Operation El Dorado Canyon

I think it is worth saying, the F-111 is probably one of the coolest jets we ever had in the inventory. I'd donate a nut to get an hour in that thing. For some reason, the FB always piqued my fancy. Standing SAC alert, in the scarves, probably playing pool and eating fancy AF meals when not...

    Operation El Dorado Canyon

Cool info Witmo. I remember seeing this as a kid, or I guess recollections a few years later (I was 3 in '86). That and actually watching jets fly off the front end of a boat into darkness in 1991 on CNN were probably the two things that most influenced my decision to eventually fly fighters too...

Anxiety with a first class medical

Haha, this is amazing, but possibly also a little beyond the scope of the OP's current life situation :) You bring up good points though.

    Airliner Deicing Procedure?

Just a little CSFF.....that looked like 1/8" to me :p

Your T.S.A. Tax Dollars @ Work or NOT ...

I was in HNL KCM behind a full Delta crew that were all "randomed". Perhaps they might consider applying that scrutiny to unverified passengers, rather than badged and vetted airline employees.

Aviation news from 90 years ago

Some things never change. There may or may not have been a similar scud run at Pres. Bush Sr's funeral in TX a few years ago as well. Luckily, no fingers were broken!

That's because they didn't have the internet yet :p

Aviation news from 90 years ago

Even wilder, Naval Aviation began 21 years before that. Some of those guys still come to 'Hook I'm pretty sure (looking at you A4 Skyhawk association admin :) )

    Possible Dangers of Memory Flying

FWIW I just flew a trip with a C-5 turned UPT T-38 LARP'er. He was good ****. The things you guys had to just pucker up and wait to see happen, teaching transitions or just generally clueless undergrads......respect. That's slightly less than single pilot, if I am accurately describing the SA...

    Fatal: walked into prop

Same here. And in my later life, the scariest thing on an aircraft carrier flight deck was the E-2 at night. Silent and invisible once those sodium lights were dimmed. I would give that thing the widest berth whilst walking to my jet. Once saw a young airman nearly lose his life, were it not for...

Day Trip to the Outer Banks

Loved visiting OBX whenever we had the chance. Looks great!

    Reno Air Race Crash

I'm sure 6+ g is not unusual in this sport. In my fighter, an easy energy sustaining turn is 3-4G, and 6-7 is not much more. These straight wing warbirds are G monsters at high speed, or so I'm told. Just simple geometry and physics of level flight can confirm the G requirements. These guys and...

1 faa failure and two 121 failures, how to move forward

To be fair, other airlines might use slightly different terminology than mine, so you could be right. At my shop, your type rating is issued based on completion of systems test/oral + MV check sim + LOE check sim. LOE being the final check event before you go out the door for OE in the aircraft...

1 faa failure and two 121 failures, how to move forward

The part about apparently getting through the entire syllabus, to include MTs/MV, and then stumbling twice on LOE. I'm sure all shops are a bit different, and I only have my own for reference, but LOFT/LOE were a lot easier than MV at mine. And you'd think someone struggling to apply the MT...

1 faa failure and two 121 failures, how to move forward

I'll defer to all of you with a lot more 121 experience than me, but this part does strike me as strange as well with respect to the OP's situation.

    Can Airlines Cancel IFR

Before my time, but within the last couple years. Short routes, though > 10 nm.

    Can Airlines Cancel IFR

At my shop, opspec says same thing as it sounds like others, w/n 10 miles, yada yada. Not same as visual approach, obviously, which is common. We also used to have pure VFR routes, though that is no longer.

    ATP-CTP

That was my experience as well. Other silver lining was that they didn't seem to care that people were actively using the time to study for the written :)
