Flight simmers - help me understand the market for super-realistic airplane models

Yes, that is it. And apparently I got the price wrong, it's only $115.

Flight simmers - help me understand the market for super-realistic airplane models

Here is a link to the first video of the series that led to my classmate buying the X-Plane add-on. And here are some screen shots. First one, note the availability of the DC Electrical Synoptic page. It appears to be fully functional and accurate, as are all of the buttons, knobs, and...

Flight simmers - help me understand the market for super-realistic airplane models

Only $150, he bought it, I didn't. Oh, I know that, but the setup you have pictured is very generic. And I'm not so much asking about the hardware, but the software. I'll show some pictures in my next post. Sure, but you have an established market. And that looks like a 172 or similar...

Flight simmers - help me understand the market for super-realistic airplane models

I am currently getting my type rating in the Challenger 650. One of the other students found a series of training videos made by a flight simulation company that are pretty good in explaining the rather complicated pre-start and startup checks that are performed. The videos are made using a...

I'm having way too much fun putting together my CFI notebook...complete with original illustrations.

I like your work. It complies with some of the most basic tenets of instruction, which are 1) start at a basic level and expand from there, and 2) teach in a manner which works for your client. Sure, some people may not prefer cutesy drawings, but when I look at the amount of people who use...

    American Flyers and their FIRC

I have to say, if someone can't get the AF FIRC test questions right, they really shouldn't be flying, let alone teaching!

"Make you cockerel crow" and other obsolete aviations terms

Yes, it's hard to get through Stick and Rudder without rolling your eyes at all the uses of the word "flippers".

"Make you cockerel crow" and other obsolete aviations terms

I actually use that on a semi regular basis. Maybe I'm just being a pretentious ****, but I certainly don't mean it that way.

"Make you cockerel crow" and other obsolete aviations terms

I'm reading a book about the early use of radar in WW2, and came across this fun gem: "Make your cockerel crow" pretty clearly became "squawk your parrot" and then "squawk". Fun. Any other obsolete terms, specifically ones that sound ridiculously quaint to us now? (Oh, and I do find that...

What is this symbol at PRB VOR?

There are two facilities there, a VOR and a TACAN. Both are L class service volumes. The Chart Supplement legend explains it pretty succinctly, it's on page 29. There are two entries because each facility may have a different service volume.

Allowing CFI to fly my plane

I agree. Same here. Like most CFIs, I have been granted access to numerous airplanes. And I almost never fly them. Probably because I'm busy flying other airplanes!

    Oh, those silly geographers.....

I agree. The Mississippi River is pretty far east of center. Rough guess, I'd say 2/3 of the country is West of the Mississippi.

    Oh, those silly geographers.....

I've lived all over the country, from CA to MD and lots of places in between. Now, in OK, I certainly wouldn't consider this a "western" state. South Central makes more sense to me. CA? AZ? Yes, definitely west. OK? Come on, it's physically right on the centerline. I get what you're saying...

    CFI practical test stumper question

The CFI checkride is much less black and white than many other checkrides. If the DPE asked me to teach a lesson on VFR cloud clearances in various types of airspace, I would probably NOT intend to address Class E surface area Special VFR quite yet. Even in a real lesson, you can't cover...

    CFI practical test stumper question

If you couldn't teach, then I expect the DPE to fail you, not revert to a Q&A. The purpose of the rating is to teach, after all. The CFI ACS use lots of terms like "demonstrates instructional knowledge of" the subject areas. So, for example, the DPE shouldn't be asking what Vx is for your...

    CFI practical test stumper question

Obviously we were not there and so don't know how the rest of the oral went, but getting one question wrong isn't usually a bust. But also, at least my CFI checkride did not consist of a series of "stump the chump" questions. I remember him asking very few actual questions. Instead, I taught him...

    The MyFlightBook thread

I just tried that out and it looks like probably a reasonable solution. I can then do a query just for those ultralight models and it will.give me a total of "other time", which is certainly adequate for my needs. Thanks!

    The MyFlightBook thread

Is there a way to have certain "aircraft" types NOT included in the totals by default? I have recently started flying Part 103 (Ultralights, specifically paramotors). They are not classified as "aircraft" by 61.51j or the reference therein to 61.5b. So it doesn't count toward my total time...

    Any Career CFI's?

Jason Miller on the Finer Points podcast discussed a couple of years ago that he charges $200 per hour for instruction. Yes, for Private as well. Now, he's in the Bay Area, so everything is more expensive, but still that's a good amount to be able to charge. Might even be higher now.

Being a CFI, and all that it entails...

I don't think I understand what your questions is. Are you asking "is practicing teaching a normal way to train to be a CFI", or are you asking "is using PowerPoint normal for CFI training". The answer to both is yes. PowerPoint is a pretty standard presentation software in just about any...
