    GPS backup

Yes, that's how it works with an FMS. That's exactly what I mean.

    GPS backup

There are many DMEs collated with localizer antennas as well, providing DME along an ILS. Yes, DME is ALREADY used as a effective GPS backup. DME/DME positioning is already included in thousands of turbine aircraft FMSes. It would not be any kind of technological problem to make units for light GA.

Agreed. This is (most likely) a really quick and easy DIY fix (with an appropriate sign-off, of course!)

KCFO RNAV 35 - Confusing NA

You're correct, it is still (and has been for as long as I know) 120 degrees for conventional procedures. There is some (not very satisfying) historical discussion in these ACF minutes from the issue being raised in 2014 by NBAA. (NBAA requested it be changed back to 120 degrees, but in the end...

KCFO RNAV 35 - Confusing NA

Mark and Jim are absolutely correct, it's angle of turn. The current limit is 90 degrees. Up until maybe 15 years ago it was 120 degrees, so if you do see one that is greater than 90, it probably just hasn't been redesigned since then. It does seem that most often when people misread this as...

How to pronounce a ATC fix waypoints intersections

Agree - @brien23 I'm not sure what your question or even statement is here. There are thousands of fixes, some with obvious pronunciations, others not so much. And it's not like there is an approved "pronunciation guide" anyway. Whatever gets the information across.

Best cell provider, other than TMobile Senior 55?

Oh man, there are so many cheaper cellphone plans. Depending on what you want for data, Tello is $9 a month according to Clark.com. There's also Mint Mobile, Visible, Cricket, and a ton of other plans, either discount versions of the big companies (like Visible is for Verizon) or just MVNOs that...

    GPS backup

Conceptually, I don't see a problem there, after all you're basically combining aspects of LAAS and DME/DME. Practically, I don't know how/if you could program existing GPS receivers to look for and include these additional "satellites".

    GPS backup

    You've just described an FMS.

    GPS backup

Thank you. I always wonder why this isn't brought up in these sorts of discussions. A backup network for GPS already exists, it's DME/DME (with or without IRU). As VORTACs and VOR/DMEs and even TACANs are decommissioned, very often the DME portion of the facility is left in place, specifically...

Southwest flight 150agl 4 mile final into TPA

As I understand it, it's a cost/benefit analysis. If you're an airline (like most of them) that flies only to major airports with multiple runways all with ILS, you really don't gain much with WAAS and LPV. You don't get lower minimums (often just the same as Cat I), and WAAS doesn't allow you...

Sumping fuel in the desert/preflight checklists?

    Same. My point exactly.

    Diversion Scenario:

Minor nit, I believe it's PAN-PAN PAN-PAN PAN-PAN, not that it's going to make any difference (especially in the US).

    Diversion Scenario:

I hope the OP comes back to clarify, because if that's all the question is, then the answer (I think) is obvious - you do what you have to do and exercise your emergency PIC authority. Head to the airport and advise ATC of what you're doing, don't wait. Squawk if necessary. But as with any...

    Diversion Scenario:

To be fair, hypoxia is a condition that we should be able to "diagnose" (word used loosely) if we're flying an aircraft where it's a possible condition. If you're flying along at 12,500 (without using oxygen) and the passenger starts showing the classic signs of hypoxia, you descend. Preferably...

Southwest flight 150agl 4 mile final into TPA

I assume the flight crew was using Jepps, so the FAA depiction is likely not a factor. Does anybody have the Jepp chart for this?
  17. RussR

    Diversion Scenario:

This whole discussion is actually hampered by the OP's selection of "hypoxia at 3000" as the reason for the diversion. Because that's a weird condition. I mean, if somehow I could actually diagnose that it's hypoxia, then the first solution is to descend, right? But how would I know it's...

    FAA

I haven't been following your other threads, so I may be missing some important detail. But every time you fill out medxpress, it's a new application. The system doesn't remember anything except for basics like your name from one application to the next. So yes, you can (and should) put it in...

Southwest flight 150agl 4 mile final into TPA

Granted I operate in an abnormal environment, but not a week goes by where I don't get a few EGPWS warnings during routine operations. Obviously I don't know the 737's implementation of various warnings, but I would think that being in a descent at 150 AGL at 5 nm from the runway would trigger...

Every 6 months. I have to re-enter my previous 3 years of doctor's visits. Fortunately I have the previous one saved for reference to manually re-enter everything, but still, come on, it's 2024.
