Navigating to a DME via Garmin when Enroute

I have the current one loaded on my sim - that's how I did all the testing to figure out there's a bug. The space limitation certainly makes sense. If that were the case, you'd think Garmin would be a bit more clear on that. My sloppy on-the-go solution is just navigate to the airfield...

Navigating to a DME via Garmin when Enroute

Interestingly enough, this works in the simulator with an old out of date database. With a current database (I have the same one loaded in my plane as I do in my sim), you cannot do that. The one I'm referencing is CSX. If I revert to the old 15 year old database - it's good. When I update to my...

Navigating to a DME via Garmin when Enroute

No, that's the whole reason I posted. They do not come up when searched once enroute (or more appropriately once a flight plan is activated). Once activated, they are no longer available in the search.

Navigating to a DME via Garmin when Enroute

This might be a peculiarity with my (somewhat dated) GNS480 - but it's a stellar unit that I love. When I am crossing our local B to or from my home airport, about 50% of the time I'll get vectors through the B and the other 50% I'll get "proceed direct XXX" with XXX being a DME only fix. The...

    Bose repairs

I've used Terry at KC headsets twice with excellent results (one Lighstpeed and one DC). Very nice guy and does excellent work.

    Anyone Running a GNS480 w/ GMX200 MFD Combination?

I have a couple of questions about database updates for this combination. New to me plane (and avionics). I surprisingly like the GNS480 interface and the GMX200 feels shockingly modern for how old it is. I'm pretty sure there are several versions of the GMX200, but mine has traffic, XM...

    Looking for Seattle Area A&P

Have a deal looking likely in the Seattle area (north side of town) on a really nice M20F. Aircraft has a fresh annual, good pedigree, and no red flags in the logs. Ideally looking for a mechanic with some Mooney experience, but just about any A&P will do that can focus on corrosion, tanks, and...

    Budget gps upgrade ?

If $ are pretty tight, you can find a clean 400W WAAS for $2K. You can probably find a guy working on the side to install it for $1500 +/-. That'll ad a pretty decent capability for the least amount of money. I LOVE my 175, but it was $9K installed. I have two giant G3X Touch screens...

Help me choose a plane for my mission (Hawaii)

Food for thought on the 310 - they practically give them away. With the OP's budget, once could essentially "refurbish" a 310 with good bones. New engines, new panel, new paint, new interior - and simply replace everything that moves. A guy hangered near me did that with a Baron. Said it cost...

Restarting training after a pretty long absence

I understand this is frustrating, but after 15 years, your best bet is to start over with a slight advantage over a new student. The average time for private is 65ish hours at 61 programs. In your case, you might push that number down in the 40's or low 50's...but even if you did it at 50...

Help me choose a plane for my mission (Hawaii)

In your budget are new P2006T. Absolutely nothing wrong with a 58 or a 310, but the Tecnam might be a niche for you. Just a personal thing, but I just won’t do open water in a single. It takes one engine out experience to form that opinion…and I’ve had mine already.

Interesting Approach - Not Sure I've Seen This Before

I’m most definitely not the most experienced pilot. It’s possible the controller was right and I flew it wrong. When he called me out of my circuit I was probably equidistant from the IF and FAF. Just a hair north of due west from FUNJO. His instructions were (as close as I can remember) / tail...

    Advice for loooooong cross-country

Not too get off track, but you can get your primary care doc or your AME to write you a prescription for O2. Then take that to any home health shop. Refills on my M9 tank are $5.70. Takes 30 secs to swap out tanks with them. Rx just states “O2 required for use at elevation or altitude over 10k...

    Advice for loooooong cross-country

One thing I’d add is look into renting a sat phone. I do this about once a year and the cost:safety ratio is off the charts. Ouse Satmodo all the time, but I’m sure there are other competitive options. I like the “we cover 99% of Americans” mobile company ads. Yes, they do..but 99% of Americans...

Interesting Approach - Not Sure I've Seen This Before

Thanks guys for the info & confirmation. I would have questioned it, but they were SUPER busy and frankly knew I could easily make the turn. The way they were vectoring us to the west of the IF, had I been on the south end of my vectored circuit, I'd have been much closer to a 30 degree entry...

Interesting Approach - Not Sure I've Seen This Before

Flew my wife and I down to Nashville for a great weekend of music and landed at KJWN. SUPER busy airport for a Friday arrival. Was told to expect the RNAV2 early on by Nashville Approach. Wound up playing the vector game for 20 mins while a bunch of PJs landed. There were 3-4 GA aircraft in the...

    Time between filing and flying

I've sort of been testing this just to see how the system works. I only file on Foreflight, so other options may be different. So far, I've narrowed it down to about 2 minutes.

    DPE PPL price

Same. In the same logbook was a monthly rollup from my 141 university program. $35 an hour wet for a 152 and an additional $13.75 for dual.

    DPE PPL price

I grimaced the last checkride I took to write a check for $800. Scheduling wasn't that hard with a few calls (emails didn't elicit many responses). I was on the "prices for DPEs are out of control train" too. Then, a few weeks ago I was FINALLY moving my logbook to electronic and my receipt for...
