C152 just landed at the closed NAS Alameda

Glad everyone is okay. Would anyone freak out If I landed there just to stretch my legs? Probably one of the few peaceful areas left in the Bay Area. My dad was in the Navy and was stationed there for a bit in the 70's.
 
Odd that it’s been closed for over 25 years and they never Xed out the runways. It is charted as closed, but painting those Xes would have been a nearly no-cost matter.

If you look very closely on the Google Maps image at the runway numbers, you can see a faint outline of the faded yellow Xs. The yellow paint didn't last and hasn't been touched up, but the white runway markings have held up remarkably well.

The runway markings honestly should have been removed a long time ago but never were. Isn't really a factor in this incident, it was an emergency landing on a closed airport and would have happened regardless of the paint. More surprising is that the waterfront property has never been redeveloped and the runways removed after all this time.

Was just reading up on the ole NAS Alameda "where they kept the nuclear wessels".

I wasn't thinking about all the contamination former military sites are well known for. I see they are concerned about PCBs, I wonder if they have tested for PFAS as well.

It's unfortunate for someone, I'm sure. The real estate would be worth an absolute fortune if it were suitable for development. There is at least some commercial stuff going on there in the old hangars.

I'm not much of an environmentalist type myself, but even I find it scary the amount of damage we have done. Given my job, I've been very involved in the PFAS situation, and the reach and ramifications of its contamination is unfathomable. At this point there is no clean up. At best we can stop polluting and maybe one day come up with adequate ways to filter and protect us from it.

Since there isn't any proven link between PFAS and deleterious effects on humans, I find the hand wringing over something that's been widely dispersed through the environment for 80 years to be a bit overwrought. It's not possible to remove it from our lives, unless spending tens of trillions of dollars is involved. The lawsuits against 3M and others are ramping up, and while that's American as apple pie, it is rather stupid.

Overall I don't get too worried about anything the EPA's scientists have identified as harmful at four parts per trillion. Life expectancy in the US was just revised to 79.25 years. That's long enough for me.

A single drop of water is about 0.05 milliliters. An Olympic-sized swimming pool holds 2.5 million liters of water, which is equivalent to 50 billion drops of water. If you were to put a single drop of black food coloring in an Olympic pool, it would hardly be noticeable. At 4 ppt, you would need to dilute one drop of PFAS in five Olympic-sized swimming pools to meet the MCL (maximum contaminant level).
 
It is reported that had engine issues so seems justified

Sounds like an IFR training flight, headed to petaluma for an approach. They considered landing at San Rafael. That’s a private aurport (I’ve always been curious about it)
Doesn’t sound like fuel exhaustion.
