Looking to build a hangar single story home inside, any ideas?

Just build it wide enough to park a nice RV inside so it can be connected to power, water, & sewage. Nice place to live and when you are ready for an overland vacation just hook up the truck and go ...
This ^^^... One example and benefit of the RV is you can pull it out of the hangar if you need the space inside.

Do you plan to diy or hire a contractor?

Like a hangar with a loft in it? Or a home with a hangar connected to it?

I'm pretty sure that's not a hangar (in a) house.... that's a house with a little hangar attached. A very nice one I might add ;)

Did you guys do a second phase? I don’t remember it being that big when you let me park on the front lawn way back when. Or the runway being that green, for that matter.
Yes. The original house had the hangar and garages along the taxiway. I wanted to be on site when we built the real kitchen, living room, master bedroom, etc...That's the "L" that extends parallel to the runway. The room we were using as a bedroom is now a guest room when we build

I hear Amazon has fold out homes for sale.
Build the hangar and then foldout a house inside.

Ok, I had to click this link. A fold out house you say? Sounds interesting! Some of them look pretty cool. I don't think I've ever seen so many 2.5 star ratings though!

*Edit - I went back and looked read some of the reviews reviews, thinking maybe the bad reviews said the roof leaks, but it would be inside of a hangar so that wouldn't matter. Nope. On one house, there were 8 reviews and not one person who left a review had actually bought one!!

One review says, "I really would love to have this mini house to test out for my dogs and to stay in . I love the structure to it and want to see how great this is ! Would love to test it!!" And then they left 3 stars! Why? Gotta love people.

Ours is 50'X60' with 18' walls and a 14'x44' hydraulic door. The back third is a loft for living; there is only two of us. The front wall of the loft area is all windows with an all glass rollup door. Under the loft is a shop area, two-car garage and utility room with a full bath. The front 2/3 houses a Maule and a 27' camper. We call this the living room since we spend most of our time downstairs. If you go single story you will want to add at least another 1,000 sqft.

I've seen plans for two story hangar homes with the homes on the second floor. I'm no expert, but I think you'd need a fire barrier between the hangar and the living area.

Also, you'd want to make sure any workshop chemical fumes don't make it into the living area.

There's no practical way to build a hangar attached to my house on the Erie Airpark, so it will be separate from the house.

Depends on what your local codes are. Here in North Carolina, a residential hangar of 2000 square feet or less only requires a two hour firewall. That means a solid door and double (or thicker) drywall. That's what car garages on houses up in Virginia required.

When this thread was started, I had no idea that I would be looking at a hangar home in the near future! I'm looking at a hangar that has a loft built in it already, with a spiral staircase. I think it has rough plumbing for a bathroom/kitchen, but still waiting on details. It backs up to the runway and has a balcony so I could watch planes. It would be two of us living there and a similar setup to what you mentioned.

I like the idea of glass roll-up doors in the loft, the shop area under the loft, etc. The only thing I might do differently is put the master bedroom on the ground, living room upstairs. Then there's my dog... not sure if he'll approve!

Yes, and thank you. I didn’t build it but if I built another one? I’d duplicate it.

Our last house was three story. I don’t miss stairs!

We also have a spiral staircase , which is one reason we installed a glass roll-up door to the loft area. It makes it so much easier to get large items up there . I can understand having a master bedroom at ground level. I am installing a lift to addressed that. I just need to finished it before I need it.

For you guys in a place in life to swing a hangar home, my advice? Do it. Don’t wait. There’s nothing like having a thought and needing a glance at the plane and being able to wander out into the hangar in your robe with your morning coffee.

Versatile. It worked as a great place to build my wife a Sprinter camper, too. Wife has space for herself and friends to do yoga.

Safe. After shoulder surgery I walked laps in the hangar for safe exercise. 16 laps equals a mile. Way better than slipping on ice outside.

Community. A friend is rebuilding her Cub and didn’t have room to do it with her 180 inside her hangar so I made space in mine. It currently has three planes, two cars, a truck, 4-wheeler, riding mower, and all the other normal stuff inside and I can still walk around easily.

Hangar home life is good!
