[rant] The really bad design thread

I'm gonna chime in every time someone makes that assertion. I LOVE my current gas cans. By far the best I've ever owned. Easiest to use I've ever owned. Spills are a thing of the past. I still have multiple five gallon cans with pre-legislation tops, but I now only use them to refill the new ones.

We have those. If you’re impatient, they do take a fairly long time to drain. So my original partner helpfully put vents in all of them. Now the current partners all complain about the dripping fuel. Those leak like a sieve without a slight vacuum in the can as it empties.

Sigh. My solution is to just cover the vent with my thumb enough to keep it from leaking, but let it drain faster. It’s not hard, you’d think pilots could figure this stuff out.

I have one of those, too. Not impressed compared to the old straight-tube style. I still spill more fuel out of this style than I ever do on an old straight spout.

I've modified every gas can I own to have a straight spout with a vent. Fortunately the Chinese don't care about the environment so those kits are easily purchased through Amazon.

I've used a few of those. They work great... until they don't, when they break or the rubber seal fails... at which point they spill more gas than would every have been lost through a simple old style non "environment friendly" spout.

"For water use only", of course. I've bought a few of those... for my "water" jugs.

From the tankless water heater thread, I noted that the drain valve hose bib had plastic threads, which immediately stripped out the first time I tried to perform a maintenance flush. Why you would use plastic in a highly stressed part, on a hot water heater no less, is boggling to the mind.
I bought a house that had plastic shower heads in each shower. The hot water caused the plastic to soften, so even if you turned the head a quarter-turn before you began - an absolute necessity - it would leak before your shower was over.

Brass doesn't seem to have that problem.

Supposing the light was an LED that generated negligible heat, consumed negligible power and is expected to outlast the rest of the fridge, what would be the implication of removing the switch and leaving the circuit permanently on?
Sounds good but as pointed out, it's not that negligible.

It's apparent few have dealt with a radiator drain in the past 2 decades, lol. Just about every one of them uses a plastic drain petcock which usually snaps off the first time you try to do anything with it.

Mounted to a plastic radiator that’s going to leak after 7 years of use

Radiator?

I was pretty excited about this until I saw what others said... Sigh.
Buy one that doesn't comply with the mandate that is not a mandate.

I have one of those too, and it sucks even more than the mandate ones.

I am definitely planning to inherit my dad's gas cans.
But do you drive on parkways and park on driveways? (Old George Carlin line.)
I thought that was Gallagher? ("And we call them apartments when they're all stuck together!")

They are crazy. These cans are awesome. :)

Ok, they are mostly awesome. The last time this came up the conversation went a bit longer and deeper. For *me* they are awesome because the gas tanks I want to fill are on top of the engines. Log splitter, mower, ATV are the only gas guzzlers I have anymore. All three allow me to rest this can on the top of the tank, hit the button and when the tank is full it shuts off automatically. Zero drips. Awesome-sauce.

Others pointed out previously that these cans are terrible for anything with a side fill, and I agree. Because you would have to support the weight of the can with one hand while holding the button down with the other.

So, there's your next level of detail.

I have one of these also. I generally like it as well. My only complaint is they can blow up like a balloon or suck in and create a stress spot on the plastic. Generally I have been happy with it.

I could go on for days. My wife has a MB. The speedo goes to 180MPH(I have no idea why). There's a visor shroud to keep sunlight off the speedo and tach and it almost abuts the speedo on the left side. Well, it does such a good job, that the 60, 70, 80MPH markers are very hard to make out in modest light. On a cloudy day, I can barely see the white tick markers on the black background of the instrument.

The shift mechanism is on the right stalk. Put it in D by pushing down. Put it in N by pushing up. BUT, it is not in 'P' (park locked) until the button on the stalk is pushed! My wife parked on a small incline, and put the car in N and it started to roll away. Yes, I know it's in the manual. Still a bad design.

The automatic hatch button is on the bottom of the hatch flange near the latching mechanism. When the hatch is fully open, the button is 6'4" from the ground. She is 5' tall. Great placement. As soon as she jumps up and pushes the button the hatch begins to come down, on her head. DOH!

I have a Polaris 4 wheeler ATV that has 120 on the speedometer...

30 mph on a paved road is pretty scary...
I used to have a Lamborghini. The speedo went to 300KPH. It was impressive. The car - not so much.

The Imperial system of measurement.

Though it probably isn't appropriate to use the word 'design' in describing a system based on the length of a dead king's foot, 3 barleycorns, the weight of a rock, distance a horse can plow in an hour, etc.

Ever since redefining the meter as a distance traveled by light in a vacuum, it threw off every other derived property by a slight amount.

AKA 43,560 square feet. A 1/4 mile square is 40 acres, which is a quarter of a quarter of a 1 mile square "section", which is 640 acres. This is why I can't remember my kid's birthdays.

I have an Arctic Cat 650 v-twin that I've had to 70, and it was still accelerating. I wanted to know how fast it would actually go, but it was just too terrifying. I honestly don't understand why they built the thing. I bought it thinking it was fast enough to ride between fields, but like you said, even 30mph is scary. Then when you figure out how thin and flimsy the tires are...jeesh. I have to admit though, the wheelies are fun.

Nobody should be bad mouthing our amazing units of measure. Here is a history lesson for the unpatriotic commie heathens that are.

There have been some good aviation takeoffs of this floating around...

I worked for a number of years (at 2 different companies) with a Brit. We got along well and gave each other grief over cultural differences. One day he was making disparaging comments about measuring something in inches and feet and not the much better metric system. I responded "Funny you're not competent with the English system of measurement..." He laughed loud and long over that one...

UTVs with short wheelbases and narrow tracks tend to get pretty squirrely when you're moving at a decent pace! Easy to oversteer/overcorrect and end up heading toward the scenery.

The artist says put the single wheel up front. The engineer says put the two back wheels up front. The economist reminds you that a trike has all of the disadvantages of a motorcycle and none of the advantages.

And Honda took a HUGE, bailiff inflicted, financial whack in the pee-pee over the artist's version.

Well, they didn't learn their lesson with the 250R/Big Red models, so they decided to try it out on Goldwings.

Trikes are not my thing.

But with an aging “Motosport” generation, it’s a blessing that there are 3-wheeled options of all descriptions available for those wanting to ride after their decline in balance and leg strength make 2 wheels impractical, if not dangerous.

At 75, I still feel competent enough to ride on 2 wheels, though more cautiously to be sure. But my BMW with a sidecar is still fun, as is Karen’s CanAm Ryker. I’m just happy to see people out riding into their golden years, whether on 2 wheels or 3.

I like that folks have options, but if the day comes that I can no longer handle a two wheeler, I’ll get a Miata and call it done!

We did a five week moto trip out west in September, a nice photo of the Wing at Devil’s Tower.

I have a fancy coffee maker that has a vacuum carafe, grinder and a timer, which I set it to start 10 minutes before I wake up so I have a hot cup waiting when I stumble down the hall into the kitchen. Like most carafes, you can pour without removing the lid from the lid from the carafe... but... you can't get it all unless you remove the lid, which gets you another 1/2 cup.

The other day it suddenly occurred to me: It's like the fuel petcock on a motorbike with main and a reserve position, which gets you an extra 10 miles. And I usually take that last half cup in the car with me as I drive the 5 miles to work, so it indeed gets me a few more miles. "It's not a bug, it's a feature!"
