Hello

Anyone succeded to mount a ipad bigger than mini on yoke ? I want to get a bigger one but I would not buy a mount just to try

I flew a few times in a 182 with the old iPad 10.2". With our panel layout, it obscured the tach a bit but that's about it. After recently switching to the mini, I didn't really notice too much a difference except that the autopilot disconnect button is easier to hit. It was a tight squeeze between the iPad and the button on the 10.2".
 
Before the Mini existed, I flew with the first and third generation iPads (9.7" screen) in multiple singles, including the 182. Yoke mount produced minimal obscuration of instruments lower on the panel in portrait mode, pretty much none in landscape mode. I used a rotating mount so I could switch back and forth easily.
 
Yes. You’ll need to order a couple of parts. I have mine clamped to the tube, right up against the back of the control wheel (yoke) so I have full nose down travel. That clamp has a ball that a clamshell extension attaches to. The clamshell then attaches to the back of the iPad mount. My mount is the large flat plastic. It lays flat on the front of the yoke. I can angle it up. I use it as my secondary iPad for plates, or anything else I need, when solo long cross country into unknown territory. When not solo, my passenger uses the iPad loose. Also, when the iPad is not in there, a rubber band holds my checklist there. You could also stick a piece of paper in there if you don’t take notes on a knee board; it’s flat enough to write on. Wish I had a pic handy.
 
^^^^^ Same here. In my 182. I tried my ipad air and it was close to interfering with the switches on the wheel and obscured my HSI unless I sat forward. Put in a mini 6 and it’s been all gravy now.
 
I fly CAP 182s with iPad Gen 9. Use a RAM yoke clamp and other bits.
 
I use RAM mount on yoke tube with two extensions (can’t remember the lengths at the moment) to run it UNDER the yoke to a RAM EZ roller cradle that has different ball mount positions on the back that and it keeps the view completely unobstructed in my 182RG (although I do have to peek around minimally to see the LG light)

A few angles. The connector clamshell is the about 2” long. I ordered a few lengths to experiment with and returned what didn’t use.

Also included how I mount my Mini. I used to use the backside for my phone on the yoke before I got the iPads. Then switched it over to the left.

Yeah, each 182 seems to have a slightly different yoke setup when it comes to clamping on. I like KYPilot's idea of going under the yoke but that doesn't work so good for me due to my height. At least not in our worn-out old bird.
 
I have a Gen1 I Pad Pro 9.7 inch. It’s just a tad too large. The new I Pad mini is almost as large as the old I Pad.

Try cutting out some cardboard slices the same size as the new mini, new I Pad, etc. and see how it fits in your I82.
 
I tried various mounts in various planes, but the best solution for me has been a child’s soft rubber case and set it in my lap. The cover keeps it from sliding around. Works great and you don’t have to find a setup for every plane you fly.

Everyone is different. I tried several locations. For me, minimal head movement was important; no up and down. So putting the i pad on a ram mount left side of windshield eye level did the trick.
 
Yoke mounts always seem like a great idea and they always create a yoke balance issue if you are IFR. The answer is developing better approach briefing skills so you can complete approaches without referencing the IPad.
 
Eh - opinions vary. I glance at the I Pad during an approach for a cross reference as well as a double check on situational awareness. I don’t have a moving map on my GTN BTW.

I’m interested in the yoke balance issue, if you could explain, please?
 
I just tilt it on top of the dash (just like on a regular table) when needed (overheats if it’s sunny)

Yoke mount way too low for me (I’m tall)

Side window or side of windshield mount can work if the suction holds (ram mount)

It’s whatever size the iPad Pro in 2021? was (10.5” maybe?)

With reading glasses the mini would probably fit better

Weight x Arm and mass x velocity. The combination with an IPad on a yoke IFR is not a good combo and when I teach instrument students who think this is a great idea they rapidly see the difference in their performance when the IPad is removed.

I used to use a yoke mount (iPad gen 3) (C206); I put it on the right yoke and tilted it towards me. It worked ok but got to be too much trouble to take in/out (not my plane). Now I use a MyClip (who decided it was a good idea to start naming stuff MY....?). Also, if you ever use the iPad synthetic vision, mounting the iPad on a yoke that is moving creates a problem.
