Staying current without a medical?

Just a quick question, I am in the process for getting an SI for a first class medical. I'm instrument rated and want to try to keep my currency if possible through this process, though technically I do not have a medical. Is it possible for me to fly with a CFII to maintain currency? As if I was a student pilot? Can I still log the time as dual?
 
Can you explain? I'm not sure I understand the distinction.

I'm not sure how others use this site, but as someone who really only ever uses the "What's New" tab, I never see any of the pinned threads.
 
We have had a single pinned thread (on the topic of PIC logging) in this forum for like 6 years. I'd expect everyone to have seen it at some point. You probably did see it, and don't remember... thus my comment that it's not effective.

Short version is that somebody has to be legal to ACT as PIC in order for the airplane to legally fly. There is no requirmnt for that PIC to ever touch a single control.

14CFR61.51 defines when you can LOG flight time, including PIC. For a private pilot, they can log PIC when they are the sole manipulator of the controls in an airplane for which they are rated. There is no requirement to be current, have a medical, or to be legal to ACT as PIC for that flight.

Put another pilot, who is legal to ACT as PIC, in the right seat. You can sit in the left seat and log PIC per 61.51 that time that you are sole manipulator of the controls. Same thing as with a CFI except you can also log DUAL received if he also gives you instruction during the flight.
 
I worked on a commercial while I waited on my SI. I logged all the hours. All that mattered to me was that I was flying anyway. I bought this book written by a lawyer. It's one of the topics. I think it's a pretty good read. IMG_1730.png
 
To maintain instrument currency, might also consider alternative using aviation training device.
(regulatory relief for instrument currency (Nov 2018) introduced significant change)

-Local flight school may have an approved ATD; many do.
-Although regs don't require an instructor; unless proficient using ATD (setup aircraft/wx etc), a CFI/I can be practical/more efficient.
-Flt schools typically require either (dual always), or (sim 'check out' with instructor).

I know it exists, but I can find it quickly because it’s pinned, therefore the pin is effective.
