Except in Florida, where @Salty lives. This state has a tax exemption for aircraft parts.

For aircraft over 2,000 pounds. And there’s also a sales tax emption for the planes themselves, for airlines. Those of us who can least afford the tax on an airplane have to pay and those for whom it’s a not much more than a rounding error get a pass.

There's a cap on the amount that's taxable on personal airplanes. I think it's $5k, IIRC. So if you buy a Bonanza for $100k in Florida, you only pay sales tax on $5k and $95k is exempt.

If the invoice I paid already included the shipping then why would they have to call to ask me to pay for shipping? And Taxes.

Quick search, and unless I am reading this wrong, there is a tax on shipping in Florida. I hear what you are saying to the fact of what they did and how they did it was unprofessional. After reading your post again, I would have walked when I encountered this...

Problem one started pretty quickly and continued the entire experience. After the first consult I got crickets for weeks. No answers to emails. This happened a couple times in the 8 month journey. And each time we had to start over to some degree to remember where we were. Always I had asked a bunch of questions that never got answered, but I'd have forgotten why I even asked the questions by then. This went on until a month ago where we finally finalized the invoice. I agreed to pay and then things went quiet again for a couple weeks.

Not sticking up for the vendor, but after a few red flags, as the words of the song go; 'know when to fold em.."

I do hope everything does workout for you, I have similar frustrations with contractors..

The exemption in sales tax for parts and equipment is only for planes over 2,000 pounds, and the dealer is required to note the N-number and gross weight. But there isn’t any real way for them to be sure the N-number given is for the plane the parts are going in.

All they need is documentation from the buyer, then it’s the buyers problem.

Yeah, you're right. I went back and looked at the tax form from when I bought my Beech. The cap only applies to the county tax.

I don't think the seller has to verify it; it's on the purchaser. Spruce always gives me the exemption, as do other companies. The only problem I have is if I buy something off Amazon or eBay, who don't seem to be tax experts.

I’m sure our county - St. Lucie - charges sales tax. We’re already the highest-taxed county in the whole state.
