Youth in Aviation, a positive story

My nephew Logan made this video for a school contest, called Reflections, which invited students to be creative in the arts, on a specific theme. The theme this year was "Beauty is....." Students were encouraged to express their creativity by creating pieces of visual art, taking photographs, writing stories or poems, performing original music pieces, dance choreography, and film and video production. Logan's video won first place (in a school of over 800 kids) in the film/video production category. Logan was 13 when he made this video a few months ago. He filmed the video shots in the airplane when I took him (and also his twin sister, Elizabeth) for aerobatic rides at our family Thanksgiving gathering at the farm, and he created this video. Elizabeth was the video narrator for the poem that he wrote.

I know, what was I thinking?!

Actually, we have about 65 local middle school kids to take flying next month or April as a reward for the kids who completed the books in the Mark Twain reading program. That's always a lot of fun.

He really is a talented young man. He has been making videos for several years now and is quite good with graphics, as well. Logan and his sister will both be good additions to the pilot population.

He did a great job... as did you. How did he feel afterwards? The only time I've ever been close to being air sick was shooting video from a helicopter, and we didn't go upside down.

I have to disagree with you Spike.... Heaven is a farm in Missouri.

Diana, I loved the shot of the loop with the camera aimed straight down the wing. The poem was AWSOME as well.

Awww, Spike. It's just so refreshing to spend time with great kids and there are so many great kids out there, including Tommy.

I may re-name this place Short 'N Ruff. I thought about trying to make excuses for the bouncing, but it's just kinda bouncy here.

He felt really good, even if it wasn't too long after Thanksgiving dinner when we went up. This was his second aerobatic ride. But, as you know, sometimes when you're filming in the air, it can add to the queasiness to be looking through a camera a lot. He actually could have kept flying, but we had to give his sister a chance to go flying, too.

He did a good job of shooting that direction...it added to the perspective. It's kinda different holding the camera still when you're pulling 3.5 G's and then zero G all within a few seconds when you're not used to it.

Loved the video and poem - esp the lines about using our passions when we're both happy and sad to explore and become. Reminded me of some dark moments during a race this past weekend and how I was able move beyond them.

Yep. And snakes in the gas stove. Snakes in the hallways, snakes in the laundry room, snakes in the greenhouse. Hmmmmm, winter is looking better all the time!

It seemed rather insightful for someone that age.

Reminded me of some dark moments during a race this past weekend and how I was able move beyond them.
