You people in NC

I'm not sure that's just not the regular line at the store. I don't gas up there enough to know.

I closed the office but went to work today.

Tons of hype on this one. Just looked at the ASOS along the coast...nothing too alarming yet.

25G41 is the strongest winds right now...in Beaufort NC.

All I know is I needed to fill my truck up today and it took 5 gas stations before i found one that had gas. Oh, and schools are closed tomorrow, supposed to be 87 and partly cloudy......

My wife panicked when it was a Category 5 out in the middle of nowhere. Afraid we'd lose power and our KOI pond would go without filtration. So after a bit of push-back (frown and moody) I relented and bought a $900 Portable generator, 15 gallons of gasoline, and a multi socket extension cord. She's happy now... Me, not so much... (barely gonna be a breeze here in Charlotte... But there's still hope, there are 2 more out in the Atlantic. Plus I might get some use out of it when I move to Tampa in 5 years. Of course by then we probably won't need electricity anymore because someone solved the cold fusion formula...

It's like flying. Better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than in the air wishing you were on the ground. In '96 we had no generator. We learned the hard way. If you never use it all the better.

generator...….I hardly even know her

MCAS Cherry Point is gusting to 76 knots... :hairraise:

Weird - must have been momentary. The stations near the coast/storm are more like 25 G 35. KILM and KSUT are two that I am watching. Probably KCRE tomorrow.

No, i've been watching it for a few hours, its been pretty well sustained at Cherry Point. I think its because the wind there right now is coming right off the ocean, due to the rotation direction of the storm. Due to the shape of the coast, the air passing Cherry point is dragged over land all the way to KILM so its losing some punch on the way. KILM wind is more from the North over land(330 27G38), KNKT more Easterly from the ocean (050 50G76)

Neighbor across the street lost a major branch of a tree in the front yard. The tree is a Bradford Pear and they're about the first things to go. Very quiet outside right now - still windy and light rain, but with the shades closed you'd never know there was anything going on.

In my area of NC near CLT the winds are only at 19 mph and are only expected to hit 23 over the next day which is plenty enough for me. Hopefully that forecast is correct.

Im right below the WENDI intersection, east of RDU. winds are blowing pretty good, random heavy rain then it stops. my back yard is littered with leaves and decent sized branches. it just keeps getting stronger

Wow... Those are some winds!

But what's interesting about these METARs to me is that it keeps saying PRESRR while the baro is going down, and then it starts saying PRESFR when the baro is going up!

I've never turned an altimeter down to 2858 before! (29.19 is my lowest.) How low (and high) do they go?

\How low (and high) do they go?

I have an old junk one sitting on me desk for a paperweight and it goes from 28.1 to 31.0

The tree is a Bradford Pear

Weeds with bark. They're good for one thing. Splitting in two.

will Bojangles be open...

But Bradfords smell soooooooooo good. Not!

I just learned of the Waffle House Index yesterday from my Chinese wife. She seems to be more tuned into these things than I am.

If you were there in '96, you know what I'm saying.

I remember Fran like it was yesterday and I was only 9 years old. Everything.. hunkering down overnight while hearing crazy winds and massive trees crashing down. Morning after, walking around in bright blue sunshine and humid heat, with a half dozen hundred + year oak trees down everywhere you looked. Smell of chainsaws, generators, burning wood, several feet of water in our basement, boiling water, no power for weeks, walking down to 5 points to get red cross water and food out of the back of a semi truck.

This storm hasn't been so bad, but the forecast was pretty dire so rest assured Fran was on my mind as I made some preparations.. I have plenty of propane to cook, lots of cold beer, generator to run the lights/fridge and a portable AC in the bedroom etc..

I do have friends/family in new bern, wrightsville and atlantic beach who got hit pretty hard. But they'll be fine, insurance and all that, this type of thing just happens every 20-40 years..

The sequence is upside down, so newest first, oldest last, on the pressure thing. If you start at the bottom it'll make sense.

The METAR equipment must have been damaged at some point today it stopped putting out data.

I recall Fran quite well. We lost 45 trees on our 5 acre property. Seemed like half of those fell across the driveway. I remember it took us two days to cut all the trees off the driveway so we could get out. I was a kid as well so needless to say I was on stick cleanup duty for many many months.

You were in my old neighborhood. My parents house is just two blocks from 5 points.

Update from hurricane Florence. As expected the crop loss is severe . This is cotton that has been subjected to high wind and heavy rain. Basically what is blown off of the stalk and on the ground is unharvestable. Hard to say what the actual loss is until this passes. Still raining and windy. We are in South Carolina and no power since Friday afternoon. image.jpeg image.jpeg

This thing is not even close to being over. The storm will be moving/moved out by Monday, but the rivers down east are expecting massive flooding. As an example, the Cape Fear river in Fayetteville was at 14 ft on Friday morning and is expected to crest around 62 ft by Tues. The streets in Jacksonville NC are up to 4' underwater - video of a herd of deer swimming across the street.

Lots more rain on the way too. No flying here until probably Tues at the earliest. But the post office just delivered mail. Thank you Benjamin.

Stopped in the Huntersville Home Depot yesterday, two people returning generators and a stack of returned ones behind the counter.

I spent the weekend in Vegas, was 100 and sunny. The wife was at home but had her kayak in the garage so I figured she would be just fine. Came home to a lot of leaves and branches to clean up though.

Here are pics taken Monday morning of the taxi way of KBBP. NOTAM was issued and airport was closed for several days. There was a total of 16" here with significant agricultural loss and flooding. Power is restored and life slowly returning to normal. Will probably take the 172 up today to survey the damage. We have a big mess here.IMG_3773.JPG IMG_3774.JPG

Being inland as far as we are, being hit less than those on the coast was of course expected but we got a lot less impact than the spinning heads on tv were forecasting. Except for several inches of rain which ran off as it should into the storm drains, the storm was a non event at my house. I feel for those who were impacted harshly. It was severe for quite a number of folks. :(

Once things settle down we may have to make a run to Myrtle or even Wilmington. You know, to show our support. And watch beer and drink football.

Nothing much to it at my house either. My family lives south of the Raleigh area. Lost power for most of a day and lots of flooded and washed out roads. They closed 15-501 between Sanford and Pittsboro yesterday evening as the river started crossing the highway. Usually that section of the river is a good 50' bellow the bridge. Probably the craziest pictures I have seen are hwy 40 that is flooded going into Wilmington for miles.

I bought mine at northern tool... “all generator sales are FINAL!”is what the sign read... by the time I got to Lowe’s and Home Depot they were all gone... I think they have a very hefty restocking fee for generators though...

I shudder to think of the job someone is going to have to do to dispose of millions of dead chickens and thousands of dead hogs.

Not a job I would relish.
