Time to fly!
Good day world travelers. I will be spending about a week and a half in Yokohama the end of July, beginning of August. Since this will be my first visit to Japan, I 'm looking for recommendations on sites to see and things to do in the evening. Also, any info on things NOT to do will be appreciated.

I will be flying into Narita and taking the train down to Yokohama.

Thanks in advance for the recommendations and insight.

Are you flying on Delta from ORD? If so, ask Greg if you can ride in the front with him. :D

Wish I was Chris! If flying with Greg at least we'd have time to b.s. a little on the break. I'll be flying Continental from Nashville to Houston and then direct Narita.

[thread creap] Is that your new bird in your avatar? Nice looking ride! [/creap]

Imagine Greg's surprise, if he found himself in the front of a Delta jet!

Taking the Shinkansen (bullet train)? That is a great ride. Took it from Nagoya to Tokyo back in 1989.

Haven't been to Yokohama, so I have no suggestions there. Other than - behave yourself. :D

First I don't know a whole lot of anything to do in Yokohama. I do like Tokyo but I like the Kansai area even better. Look in the guide books and get to a shrine and temple or two, if you can make it into Tokyo go see the Imperial Gardens, take a pass on Japan Disney. Hitting a shushi bar is must, as is a yaktori place. Look for weird theme restaurants too. I went to a 'Canadian Themed' restaurant in Osaka once that was really lots of fun. IMHO pass on Karaoke. Also there is some very unique zoning in Japan. So when looking for bars look for ones that allow foreigners (gaijins) and stay away from ones with girls out front in prom dresses.

Above all learn a few phrases of Japanese. Remember you are a gaijin and using the informal anything is bad manners. For thank you, you will always say Domo Arigato never just domo. That alone will score you some brownie points with the Japanese.

Appreciate the info Scott. Having worked for Japanese companies almost my entire adult life I have picked up a few phrases but not nearly enough to carry on a conversation.

Never thought about the themed restaurants but will be sure to check them out. I expect I'll have time in the evening to take the train back into Tokyo but my understanding is that the last train leaves for Yokohama about 11:00 p.m.

How will I know which clubs allow foreigners? I've already been advised by one of my hosts that we will be attending a reception at a local club but once we leave I won't be able to return :dunno:

I gotta ask, what's up with the prom dress clubs or is that asking the obvious?

Thanks again.

Generally if you try to walk into a Japanese only bar you will be stopped, if you manage to get in they will let you know in there pleasant and polite manner that the bar 'is not for you', apologize and walk out. Most Gaijin bars are open to the street and you can see other gaijin in there.

Could you bring back a set of tires for me? I have enough tshirts.
