Ouch! I just got an e-mail from XM saying they are increasing prices $5 / month.

Satellite maintenance increase.

I'm trying to decide whether to continue or downgrade service.

I can't say I have a problem with paying more. The service is worth every penny.

EDIT: Of course, if you don't use it then it probably isn't worthwhile. But I use it quite a bit.

Price hasn't changed since introduction until now. Inflation is a fact of life.

I agree, but I would have liked to see a small increase last year, one again this year, and then the following year. It's not my "sandbox" so they can do what they want, but a business model dependant on subscribers, slamming your customers with a $60/year increase seems harsh, and it will scare off new "on the fence" customers reducing revenue causing the need for more increases. I guess without competition, they think they can do want ever they want.

It's an "each additional subscriber is incremental revenue" with little or no additional cost. If you turn away one subscriber because of the increased cost, you'll need 10 more to make up the difference. Add to that the cost of the equipment to start with. Sorta like the sports/entertainment model where the real money is made from beer/drinks/concessions - increased ticket prices mean the promoter tends to make less money.

They will be challenged (and find their ability to raise price limited) once ADS-B comes into play if ADSB provides radar data.

I'm not holding my breath for ADS-B In service. That's a carrot to encourage adoption of ADS-B Out -- I'm willing to bet the good stuff won't be expanded outside of the trial areas. Call me cynical.

I bet it will. It works NOW in the areas that been planned for next year.
ITT is being very agressive with installation. I think all East Coast is covered now. At least i see it working along all routes i flew in last 2 months.

Besides there is nothing wrong with having ADSB out. It probably saved me from midair once. And it needs to do it only once to pay for itself.

P.S. I'm not affiliated with ITT or FAA anyhow besides being user of their product.

This may be an attempt to jack up revenues for a bit before XM weather goes the way of Blockbuster.

Once satellite (or any other method, for that matter) comms are established, why be limited to a subscription service? Why not web mobile access?

Same data for free from NOAA.
