Martin, I’m a relatively new WINGX user and generally happy (other than a couple of bugs I’ve reported). I don’t have experience with the prior version. What changed in version 9 that led to your dissatisfaction?
Version 9 introduced a new mapping system which felt and looked differently. It seemed to allow much faster panning; unfortunately it also broke a few things, most notably the ability to stop said faster panning with a tap of the finger (you now have to wait for it to slow down on its own), and tapping on objects on the map, which was quite intuitive and reliable in prior versions, now often surprised me.
Worse yet, I found the tiles for FIS-B weather radar appearing and disappearing somewhat randomly when I pan or pinch-zoom the map. Meaning it was very hard to get a quick idea of where the bad weather was. I shared the following video with Hilton Software to illustrate what I was seeing; this is with WingX connecting through WIFI to my Lynx NGT-9000+
There were no updates from version 9.0 for a long time. I went to the Hilton booth at Sun 'n Fun and also at Oshkosh to understand what their plans were and heard that the snags I spoke about were understood and would be fixed "in the next few weeks".
I had looked at some alternatives in the meantime - got a subscription of Aerovie and found it to be great for flight planning and not so great for in-flight use; also got a trial version of Foreflight and was overwhelmed by it initially. Having prepaid for my WingX subscription int 2022 during a Black Friday special a while back, I had a strong interest in WingX getting fixed - after all, prior to version 9 it did everything I wanted my EFB app to do.
Then version 9.1 came out a few weeks back - the long anticipated update with bug fixes. Surely they fixed the panning issue, right? No, they didn't - you still have to wait for the map to slow down after scrolling it. Worse: On the few flights I made with 9.1, the symbol representing my aircraft on the map turned to all sorts of random headings.
I don't know if 9.1 fixed the weather issues I always had with 9.0. I was frustrated to the point that I decided to forfeit my remaining WingX subscription time. I figured there must be a reason why Foreflight is the market leader in terms of numbers and purchased a subscription. I have flown with it a few times, and while there is definitely a learning curve, so far I found it actually does the things I expect it to do reliably. I am far from proficient with Foreflight at this time, but will use it at least for the year I have paid for and then go from there for the future.
