I stumbled across a video of Hilton demo’ing WingxPro in his Oshkosh booth. In the demo, he shows that Wingx can overlay approach plates on maps, but he breezed through it and I can’t figure out how he did it.

Has anybody done this and can share the steps? Thanks!

Jim

AFAIK, it's not an overlay as in some other apps. What I think he was showing (if I remember without looking) was

1. Tap on the airport in the route/info list
2. From the resulting menu, select "Add IAP to Route"
3. Select the IAP - a new window will open showing the choices.

But the chart, if you want to keep it up, will use either full or split screen.

Try it and see. I don;t have it in front of me and I don't use it that often so I could be off.

That requires having the Advanced IFR subscription.

Thanks guys. I’ve got the Advanced IFR subscription. And I do use the “Add IAP” so I know that flow. This looks like it actually overlays the plate on a base map. Totally can’t figure out how he makes it work.

If you’re interested, he shows the plate overlay at the 0:57 mark in this video.

Just watched it again and paused just before he loaded the overlay plate. Looks like he clicked on “Show IAP on map.”

I don’t recall seeing that before... will test again when I get home from work.

I'll have to look at that too.

I watched the video but dint see the option in the app. Perhaps a demonstration of a future update?

I came across a short promo video for version 9.1 early this morning that looked like a work in progress but I can’t find it tonight. It was in the same style as this recent video:

Perhaps it was uploaded prematurely, but hopefully a sign that an update is coming.

Not that video - it was a newer one uploaded in the last 48 hours seemingly announcing version 9.1. No person speaking - just background music along with video showing a few new features similar in style to the new one I included in my previous post. It seems they are getting a little marketing energy going.

From Hilton...

“We are certainly looking to add new features and improvements to WingX but I do not have an ETA on overlay approach plates as of yet.”

The 9.1 video is back...

It still looks like a work in progress.

And gone again.

I updated WingX on my my iPad and flew today. I didn’t try any new features, but did have an issue that I don’t recall ever seeing before. The reported track would continue to change from being accurate (matching the GNS 430W in the plane) to being 90 or more degrees off to the west. It would gradually change back to accurate - not immediately, but by a degree or two at a time. This happened several times on a 60 mile cross country flight.

Has anyone seen this with WingX before?

See the change log above, mentions GPS

Can I ask a favor of anyone who has the IFR subscription, just looking for screen shots of the menu option to add the IAP overlays on the moving map, plus a screen shot of an IAP on the actual map.

Cousin is updating his user guide for WingX and would like to include those images in the guide, images would be credited accordingly

First photo is the result of tapping on the airport in the plan window. Look to the bottom of the list. Next two are in sequence.

Thank you, this is exactly what he was looking for

I assume the % values are the opacity ?

My first critique is with 100% selected there is data from the enroute covering data on the approach chart.

I opened a ticket with Hilton and just got a response that this is a known issue and they are working on a fix.

Was this with an external GPS source or the built in one ?

Just got an email from tech support saying the wandering heading bug has been fixed and sent to Apple for their approval.

I experienced the same thing flying yesterday for first time since new WingX release. Wish I had thought to include that in my bug report. Got an almost immediate response from support (on Saturday). I'll wait and see what the new release does before reporting the ghosting.

I am about to go to the dark side.
I just did that. After almost a decade with WingX Pro - and very satisfied until version 9 - I have switched to ForeFlight. Now I'm back in learning mode, but my first impression is it's a much more mature product, made by people who actually care about their product and its evolution.

Too many bells and whistles.

Martin, I’m a relatively new WINGX user and generally happy (other than a couple of bugs I’ve reported). I don’t have experience with the prior version. What changed in version 9 that led to your dissatisfaction?

Version 9 introduced a new mapping system which felt and looked differently. It seemed to allow much faster panning; unfortunately it also broke a few things, most notably the ability to stop said faster panning with a tap of the finger (you now have to wait for it to slow down on its own), and tapping on objects on the map, which was quite intuitive and reliable in prior versions, now often surprised me.

Worse yet, I found the tiles for FIS-B weather radar appearing and disappearing somewhat randomly when I pan or pinch-zoom the map. Meaning it was very hard to get a quick idea of where the bad weather was. I shared the following video with Hilton Software to illustrate what I was seeing; this is with WingX connecting through WIFI to my Lynx NGT-9000+

There were no updates from version 9.0 for a long time. I went to the Hilton booth at Sun 'n Fun and also at Oshkosh to understand what their plans were and heard that the snags I spoke about were understood and would be fixed "in the next few weeks".

I had looked at some alternatives in the meantime - got a subscription of Aerovie and found it to be great for flight planning and not so great for in-flight use; also got a trial version of Foreflight and was overwhelmed by it initially. Having prepaid for my WingX subscription int 2022 during a Black Friday special a while back, I had a strong interest in WingX getting fixed - after all, prior to version 9 it did everything I wanted my EFB app to do.

Then version 9.1 came out a few weeks back - the long anticipated update with bug fixes. Surely they fixed the panning issue, right? No, they didn't - you still have to wait for the map to slow down after scrolling it. Worse: On the few flights I made with 9.1, the symbol representing my aircraft on the map turned to all sorts of random headings.

I don't know if 9.1 fixed the weather issues I always had with 9.0. I was frustrated to the point that I decided to forfeit my remaining WingX subscription time. I figured there must be a reason why Foreflight is the market leader in terms of numbers and purchased a subscription. I have flown with it a few times, and while there is definitely a learning curve, so far I found it actually does the things I expect it to do reliably. I am far from proficient with Foreflight at this time, but will use it at least for the year I have paid for and then go from there for the future.

“.... Worse: On the few flights I made with 9.1, the symbol representing my aircraft on the map turned to all sorts of random headings. “

Go back and apply 9.1.1 that fixes the random heading changes

Minor update posted today. Seems more stability based

Minor update - 9.1.3.3 out today - it's undocumented on their change log but it supports dark mode and minor fixes
