My Win 7 computer has been trying to load the same 5 updates for over a week now. The Microsoft automatic troubleshooter doesn't fix anything.

A Google search turned up something called Error End on the Wilki-Errors web site. I'm loath to try it for fear of making things worse.

Suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks

Have you tried installing them one at a time?

Is the problem with all updates, or just certain ones? I ran into a problem where Windows 7 Update wouldn't work at all with certain hard drives that had 4K sector size.

1. Shut down all applications.

2. In the Search box by the Start button, type CMD, but don't press Enter. Instead, press CTRL+SHIFT+Enter .

3. When the UAC box comes up, click Yes.

4. Type net stop wuauserv and press Enter.

5. Type cd /d %windir% and press Enter.

6. Type rd /s SoftwareDistribution and press Enter to delete the Windows Update cache. It may take a few moments.

7. Close the Command terminal and restart the computer.

8. Open the Command prompt as admin again (steps 2 and 3 above).

9. Type net start wuauserv to start the Windows Update service, in case it didn't start automatically.

10. Try installing the updates again in the usual way.

I deleted the cache by going to windows software distribution download and deleting everything in this folder.

The next morning the same 5 updates failed again. Did this method differ from doing it from the command prompt as you suggested?

When I tried it from the command prompt at net stop wuauserv I got "system 5 error access denied"

Thanks for your patience.

That error usually means that the Command prompt is running without admin privileges, or the account you opened it from is not a member of the Administrators group.

To find out if your account has admin privileges, go into Control Panel -> User Accounts and see if the account you're using is a member of Administrators. If you don't know what account you're using, open a Command prompt and type whoami .

When you run the Command prompt as Administrator, it should open in

C:\Windows\ system32

When you open it as a user, it will open in

C:\Users\[User Account Name]

Also, check whether your clock and time zone are set correctly, and try disabling your antivirus software before the update.
