what language is it from?
...if find that sort of stuff fascinating....accents and how languages get mashed together and butchered even from migration.... sometimes it seems word like this morph from strong accents... mispronouncing words or misusing words because of translation errors, then compounded by poorly educated folk trying to spell it like it sounds, then you end up with some interesting dialects....
 
I always understood kill to be Dutch - but the internet says it is "Middle Dutch". I think I'd personally still say "Dutch". BTW, the Dutch influence on architecture in Albany is really prevalent - other places in NY, too, but I personally saw a lot more Dutch-style architecture in Albany than I did when I was downstate or in Rochester. That part of Albany is pretty cool. Not something I often see down here in Atlanta.
 
Albany is close to RPI in Troy. If you have a teenager who is considering Engineering as a possible field, drop by and take a tour of the campus. My son is in his Senior year there. It's highly rated, particularly in the field of Mechanical Engineering.

I don't know anything about that area....
but an interesting side note about dutch
as I understand it, the Pennsylvania dutch....that a lot of folks think to be dutch...ie from the Netherlands... is from the word "deutsche"...they're German as I understand it....

I've been to a few RPI hockey games. It's a nice campus (or, at least, was back then). And I recently learned from the History Channel that it was apparently the first civilian engineering school in the U.S.

Yep, oldest engineering school in the country is what we were told.

Don't know much about the NCAA D1 hockey team, but I love watching the ACHA D2 team on Youtube. College sports like they are supposed to be. Competetive games against other schools for the pure love of the game and without all the money. Some pretty good hockey, and some interesting rivalries as well.

Full disclosure here. My son is the captain of the ACHA team, so I may be a bit biased. Sure is fun to be able to watch him play every week on YouTube.

I may be a bit biased... RPI seemed kind of functioning as a feeder school for outfits like GE and IBM, back when both of those companies were developing a lot of very high tech stuff. Had quite a few friends who worked at GE's CRD, when they were working on a lot of stuff that went fast and high, and an outfit in Schenectady that made things for submarines quiet. The idea being, if you could put up with the BS at RPI, you'd fit right into the corporate culture at GE. Keep your head down, keep quiet, and remember that you can be replaced by somebody younger in an instant. Guys at the top of the world in their fields, being managed by 20 somethings with MBA's taken right out of the pages of Dilbert.

On the plus side, it convinced me to stay away from the fortune 100's, and I didn't get hit with the downsizing/outsourcing waves that hit those groups.
 
I live 20 mins away from Kline Kill. You've probably already made arrangements, but I'd choose to stay in Hudson (remarkably an old whaling town). Walkable, and a fun town to visit. It can be a little pricey. Tough to get Uber/Lyft around here, rental car is definitely recommended. We've had a fair amt of rain, so I wonder what kind of condition the field will be in - might be a bit wet. If you want lunch near the field I'd recommend Bartlett House in Ghent. If it's a nice day and you want something a little different, you could kill an hour at Art Omi (pronounced Oh-My).

I was once forced to work in upstate NY for a Winter. It was hilarious. Those people are insane and the pizza is terrible.

Luckily, I was always on the other side of the mountains from Albany, so I didn't have to deal with all the criminal activity...
 
MY EFFING RENTAL CAR JUST BROKE DOWN ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD!!!!!!

So the rental car broke down and when I called budget, they sent a towing company out to come to the car. Well they towed the car and drove me to the towing facility where they tow vehicles rather than to budget where I could get another car.

And the driver took off and so now I'm just hanging out at some tow truck facility wondering what the hell I'm supposed to be doing.

I start asking people if they work for the company and where I'm supposed to go and finally some strange woman who I have no idea who is tell me to jump in her car and she takes me back to the airport.

Back at the airport oh, budget wants me to fill out some sort of accident report explaining all the details of everything that happened and wanted me to give information about some numbers that are on the keychain and they're asking me all these ridiculous questions about paperwork that's in the car at the tow impound place.

I lost it just a little bit and unfortunately gave it to the guy behind the counter and I'm not sure even now that I'm all that bothered by it. It took me another 45 minutes to get a car. Once I called and said I was in distress they should have send somebody out with an alternate car for me and then they should have handled the towing versus just sending a tow truck to come get me and making me deal with all that crap.

Terrible evening.
 
Oh that sucks. Sounds like you're a half step away from being in a John Candy movie. Are you going to see the Comanche tomorrow?
 
I was going to take a friend flying for the first time Saturday. We should stop by Kline Kill so I can see a ragged, angry, and unshaven 6PC and say “See, that’s a real pilot, that’s what you could have too if you work hard”.

Sorry for such a crap rental car. At least it is a nice blue sky day for flying if you get to take a test fly. And it is now “normal cold” around here.
 
Take the Comanche south along the Hudson toward Kingston, or north around Lake George. Some of the prettiest flying scenery around.
 
If you like the coloring in the map things on where you've flown over things, and haven't picked them up already, it's pretty easy to swing over and pick up CT, MA, NH, VT starting from Columbia County. Looks like you have a beautiful day for it today.

Watch those wheels in the soft ground!!! We have 4 seasons here, and 3 of them are rain.

+1 on GFL. Nice airport, less crowded than south. Preferred runway is north, can't remember if that's 1 or 3.

this happened about 2 weeks ago on the Kingston bridge heading eastbound. The westbound side doesn’t have a toll. Either way, I stuck 2 bucks in an envelope and sent it to them, lol.
Everywhere else around there has the auto toll…that’s why I thought it was so odd the bridge only took cash/ez pass.

Fall foliage was peaking then and it truly is a beautiful area with some small great towns and villages. Never been to Albany but landed at Schenectady on my long solo cross country about 13 years ago. Good times.
 
:) I think you timed it in the middle of the de-construction. I went both ways last weekend, no booth, but the cones were still around the rubble where they used to be.

Schenectady was a good choice. I think you avoided the landing fees that way. ANG has C-130's based there, fun to watch them fly in the pattern and watch them do touch and go's. Amazing that something that size can go so that slow. They look like they're just hovering at times.

I don't know anything about Albany, but I know Budget sucks ass. So if you'd asked for advice about renting a car from Budget, I would have steered you away. Remember to check your credit card bill to make sure that Budget doesn't charge you for the towing. I'm not kidding.
