So I have been following some Apple news/forums for awhile.. It seems like the iPad mini4 will be the last iPad mini they produce. They are focusing their efforts into their Pro line (I have the 10.5).

I am sure they will have some stock for awhile but after time the stock will be gone and the processing power will be lacking when it runs the latest Foreflight application.

I love my 10.5 mounted on the yoke of my Cherokee but it is sometimes rather large and have thought about going back to the mini... (I like I can see my plates without zooming ect)

So who else is worried that Foreflight will run slower and slower to the point the iPad mini will not be able to keep up and not having a replacement to upgrade to?

What I will do:
  1. Move to a bigger iPad I had two generations of full-size iPad before I went to the Mini. I prefer the form of the Mini (which is why I bought it), but don't see any big problem going back.
  2. Use my 8" Android tablet (or a later one) more often, perhaps move to it as primary.
I'll go out on a limb and guarantee "Foreflight will run slower and slower to the point the iPad mini will not be able to keep up." My crystal ball says it will happen as soon as Apple comes out with an iOS the Mini can't accept.

Agree! Loving my 10.5 Pro

Yea if I could go back I'd actually probably buy the bigger size over the mini. I have a mini 4 and it still seems to run ForeFlight quite nicely.

I have an Air2 that works fine in my Cherokee (in portrait orientation)

I guess my question was driven by the mini vs full size debate

Anyone have any experience using a Verizon Ellipsis? My wife got conned (convinced) by the Verizon rep to get one a year ago, and I have installed some EFB tools onto it. However, I notice it is prone to running slow and running out of battery somewhat quickly.. I am just not sure If I want to bring it into my flight bag for my checkride.

As for the IPAD, I'd love to get one. I plan on getting the smallest size that is still new at some point for foreflight purposes. Of course, then I would have to switch to getting an Iphone too..

I already switched to an iPad Pro 10.5... I'm not sold on it, I miss having room to yoke mount it so for now I use it in my lap. I use Garmin Pilot so I usually have an Android tablet as a backup so I'm considering an 8" as a backup and Yoke mount plate viewer, maybe the Lenovo Tab 4 8 Plus if it ever actually ships in the US.

I'll switch to another tablet. The mini is the only thing hat fits on the yolk of my Mooney, which is where I want the thing. I'll buy the last iteration of the mini 4, then once it gets too old I'll buy another tablet of a similar size. If I have to switch software platforms, too damn bad.

I broke my mini 4 and went (reluctantly) to the Pro 10.5. I'm sort of used to it now but would gladly go back to a mini 5 if they had made one. I considered buying another mini 4 but as the offerings stood, the performance of the pro 10.5 over the fairly old mini 4 outweighed the much nicer form factor of the mini.

I'm so with you on this. I have a Mini 2, and it is just a bit too slow for comfortable use in FF. In particular, taking notes on the scratch pad is very hit and miss due to performance. I'm seriously considering buying a Mini 4, but I'd like to know for sure there will be no Mini 5. I think a full size iPad on the yoke would be uncomfortably big in my PA-28. I've also read the rumors about the Mini's demise, and I'm unsure what to do...

Keep using my mini 4, it's more than fast enough for foreflight so shy of me breaking it, which I don't see happening, or Apple making a better device, I'll just keep using what works, which is my mini 4.

I've also found that "updating" Apple devices mostly just slows the things down, and I really don't need to have access to the newest emojis.

maybe we can hack a faster android tablet to run iOS . . . .

And on 9/12 we will see if there is a iPad mini 5 'pro' [which is the rumor] in the offing -

Ha, care to share a picture or two of your mount? I have a 9.7 inch pro and it seems pretty big to mount in my yoke and still able to see the DG tach etc

Same thing I did before the mini existed and the full size iPad was too big for the cockpit. Use an Android tablet.

I've changed some pieces since these photos, but it still pretty much the same.

Not terrible and I can still see the DG even...

I went from a Mini to an Air, Cherokee 140, suction-cup to the windshield on the passenger side - works great. It blocks a little more view but is much easier to use.

That's when the ipad mini 4 will be on clearance probably.
Best buy just ran them for $279 last week or so. I spoke with a manager I know there, and he felt sure they would go to $249 soon.
Back up to $399 now. For now.
I can't imagine a full size ipad with that mount in my lap....but I've never tried it. I do keep the seat high too, so maybe I could lower it.

It's actually not to bad on my 180...

I currently have the iPad mini 2 for my bird, it really has starting slowing down significantly, but I was holding out until this next announcement to get a new iPad. I was really hoping for a mini as I find it the perfect size for GA. At work I use a full size iPad and I personally find it just a tad too big to fly with, especially in a single piston, but if its the end of the line for mini I guess I'll just get a new regular sized iPad to fly my bird with.

IPad mini 2 was unusable for me. I picked up an iPad Pro 10.5 and have been extremely pleased with its performance. No regrets and the larger form factor actually makes Foreflight more usable for me.

I just flew my last XC solo up to KMVN just north or Rend lake. Storms were moving in, it was getting dark, I had no weather, and no gps. Just a paper chart and good ol' reckoning. Got a little stressful when I couldn't see very well.
On my first XC solo, KEVV approach probably saved my bacon by calling and asking me if I had weather in the cockpit. I told him no, and he said there was a heavy storm in front of me. I could see the clouds and rain, and would have diverted, but by the time I would have gotten close enough to see how bad it was, I'd have been in some hellacious wind.

My first purchase will be a gps (stratus or stratux) and ipad...very soon lol.
So if they do away with the mini, I guess full size it is. I actually prefer the larger size, but didn't think it would fit well in the cockpit.
Glad to hear it's doable.
Actually hate to use iAnything just because of iTunes, and the proprietary cords/chargers, etc.. but haven't seen too many product reports that can beat it's reliability overall.

The good news is iTunes isn't actually needed for anything. I have a third party tool I use to copy my music and movies to mine instead of iTunes. The additional cord types are annoying, as is the lack of a user visible filesystem and having to 'share' files between apps instead of just pointing the app at a folder. iOS 11 may be changing some of that, but I can't try the beta since the iPad is my only iOS device and I need it for actual flying.

I had the original iPad.
The most annoying piece of crap ever. I gave it to my son and I swear, he gave it back...and said, "I'll never use it"
We've been pretty hard core Android since. But you can also become 'Android annoyed' when they act up. Shutting off at 30% battery out of nowhere, apps crashing, etc.
I like the freedom of the Android world better, but it's really High wing vs. low wing all over again.

If foreflight would just go ahead and port their app over to android I'd just find a similar sized android tablet.

Otherwise I guess just suck it up and buy a full sized ipad although I have to say I am primarily using my phone in flight now and the ipad for flight planning. I could probably get away with planning on the phone but the mobile version is just too limited. For me even the mini is bigger than I want mounted, the "plus" sized iphones are perfect for a simple heads up map/traffic display.

The mini fits in my map pockets though, anything larger won't.

Sitting in my Comanche the mini barely gets the way . . . . whereas the iPad Pro 10.5 is ALWAYS in the way. Blocks instruments too which is bad.

I have been an Android user up until now. I am having to switch to an Ipad due to moving into 135 ops and Foreflight is required. I really wanted the Mini 4, but am leery of investing that kind of money into old technology. I was hoping to see a new Mini in the near future, but that doesn't sound like it is going to happen. Its looking more and more like I will have to go with the Pro, unless someone has a better suggestion.

That is the same conclusion I drew from the photos posted in this thread.

I've been keeping an eye on FlyQ. It seems to be getting more interesting all the time.
Still need and iPad at this point, except for the 'pocket' version which I have on my phone...but I'm wondering if they open it all up to Android eventually.

I don't speak for the company, but I know the president and I use flyq. Last I checked they don't have any immidiet plans for Android and hence I am switching to fruit phone.
