Ugggh... I've been to Oshkosh enough times that I should know this, but know that all of you will be able to answer this while doing several other things at once. My friend Kelly is giving this RC plane to her husband for their 25th anniversary. I was curious as to what it was!

Thanks! Notice that she is getting a trip to Hawaii... I wish it was MY 25th anniversary!

Sorry 'bout that! Transferring it to Photobucket gave me my answer though. It's a Mustang... Kelly sez it has an 8 foot wingspan. I hope her DH doesn't crash this one... apparently he has a couple of other planes in various states of repair and disrepair!

I hoped you scored a 55% scale Mustang, rather than the RC model. Those exist too, here's a fun account by Jim "eyeballs" Shafer:

There is a whole line of 1/2 sized war birds available as kit or plan built. They use 80 to 150 hp engines. Mostly the 100 or 125 lyc ground power units. There is a 50% P-51 here in Phoenix owned by a fighter pilot wannabe. When he saw my Rans S-10 painted like a Me109, he wanted to 'dogfight.' This is in a plane that has a roll rate like a C-172! I couldn't convince him that my kit plane was better than his P-51.

So we did the simulated combat thing. (took me a long time to convince him to wear a parachute) Started left wing to left wing. At the 'fights on' call he cranked into a flat turn. I went vertical, rolled onto his six and called 'guns, guns, guns.' He didn't know where I was! He demanded another try, and another, and another. He had no clue about ACM. Finally I let him get on my six and track me through a few gentle turns. Then I said, 'Now I am going to your six without using the vertical.' He allowed as how I couldn't do that. Started a turn to the right, reversed, reversed etc. Took three reversals in a scissors to have him pop out in front. <G> He doesn't talk to me anymore.

Bottom line is that these airplanes look a lot like the original but are completely unlike the original in flight characteristics.

I think I actually saw one of those in Watsonville back in 2001, but it may be my memory playing tricks.

Technically it's not a warbird.

It's a TOY.

Well... I have always told Kelly to tell Scott that he needs to learn to fly like he really means it, but for some unknown reason, he has no interest in becoming a pilot. He does enjoy his toys though... and even putting them back together after a less than excellent landing. :rolleyes2: No figuring out some people, I guess. :dunno:

I'm sorry, but not knowing what a Mustang is is a clear violation of FAR 45.51(d) and you must hereby surrender your pilot certificate.

Oh, and you're going to be deported. Not knowing what a P-51 is is un-American. :goofy:

(I mean seriously Lynn, come ON! I bet my mom knows that's a P-51. ;) ;))

Now, that is just cruel, Kent... I can give up my pilot's certificate and get sent somewhere where there are no decent malls... but being relegated to below the "mom" category in aircraft identification??! (head hanging) Well, at least you were nice about it. :) I got an e-mail once from someone on the POS who was personally insulted that I couldn't tell that he flew a modified Cherokee 150C and I thought it was a 140. :rolleyes2: His friends weren't particularly nice about it either. Apparently, his airplane is faster than my Archer though, so I guess rightfully so! Live and learn... I'm just happy to still be hanging around.

Okay, I might have been exaggerating about that. ;)

150C? Hell, I'd have called it a 140 too. I thought I knew my Cherokees pretty well, but I just had to go back and look in the TCDS because I didn't think they ever officially had a "PA-28-150" I thought it was always called a Cherokee 140 even after they upgraded the engine. Oddly enough, the TCDS doesn't list a 140hp engine for any of the PA28's.

Apparently, his airplane is faster than my Archer though, so I guess rightfully so!

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Yeah, those small-engine Cherokees are well-known for doing at least 140 knots (that's where the name came from, right? LOL) - Until you actually fly them. :D

I think he designed and built most of the mods on his airplane and now he gets 155 MPH at cruise at 7,500' at 75% power. It's probably one of a kind. He's an interesting guy and on the side does things like pterosaur (ancient flying reptile) research.

155mph? In a Cherokee, on 150hp? I don't buy it. That's 18 knots faster than book on a 150C. Unless one of the mods added was a retractable landing gear system, I've gotta call BS on his claim...

Maybe you should go fly some formation with him and see whose bird is really faster. That'll teach him to jump all over you for not recognizing The Best Cherokee Ever. ;)

Could it be TAS? 7500 feet? Dunno. I don't have any appreciable Cherokee time.

Does seem unlikely.

He claims it trues out at 155 MPH at 7,500' and 75% power, Greg. He put in an STC conversion for the O-320 engine to put out 160 HP and also modified the airframe in every way possible including making the tail strobe flush on the vertical stab and the position lights on each wing contained within custom wingtips. No retractable gear so far, Kent. He sent me photos once and I wish I'd saved them. I know it sounds unbelievable, but I guess all of these seemingly small changes can add up to big results.

The guy with the wicked fast Cherokee 140...are his eyes brown?

134kts true? NFW. Well, I take that back. In a descent you could get that.
