I have a non-waas gns430 in my experimental. It has functioned well for many years. Here in the Southeast I frequently find re-routes along airways and single pilot IFR in unfamiliar territory I find it can be challenging to fly the plane, figure out what identifiers are needed for the reroute, enter those identifiers in the 430... So, I have been considering upgrading to a gtn 650 in large part for the airways.

For some unknown reason, the 650 and the 430 do not share the same tray. Is there a premade harness available to convert 430 wiring to 650 tray requirements? How much should I expect to pay for an avionics guy to do the conversion?

I almost think I would prefer to wait for the IFD440. It will share the same tray as the 430 so install cost will be less. I believe I would prefer its layout with dedicated button functionality also. Anyone hear rumor speculation or lies about when it will get released?

Depending on a lot of factors, I'd start out expecting $2K for the install.

I just completed this same conversion and my local MN avionics shop charged $1000 plus a few bucks for miscellaneous supplies. They did an awesome job and I am thoroughly enjoying the upgrade.

P.S. Don't let them talk you into trading in your old 430. If you don't plan on using it anymore, just list it under the classifieds here on on another forum and you will recoup more of your investment. It ended up costing me just under $7500 to do the upgrade when all was said and done.

The IFD440 is currently about the same price as the GTN650 under the pre-sale offer, but it will not be released for some time. The full retail price of the IFD440 is said to be about $5000 more than the 650. If you think you want the 440, you should talk to the Avidyne guys and put down a pre-payment now. It will save you thousands when the unit is finally released.
