I realize that a large portion of you already seem to know the life stories of one other, and there are probably some similar threads like this already on the board, but I'm still trying to sort everyone out. This question was inspired by a similar thread I just saw on the red board...

Me: Director of Technology/Linux Evangelist for a financial services corporation. Before that I worked in Los Angeles, in the special effects industry, but as a Systems Admin, so doing similar geek-type work.

I also like long walks in the park and holding hands at sunset. Okay, your turn..

Out of work rocket scientist. Well, software geek. Since the flight computer controls the rocket, and I was working on the software, then I'm a rocket scientist.

*nix geek.
database guru.
chocoholic (I mainline Ubet's, Hershey's in an emergency)
hate long walks in the park.
have turned down jobs that require me to move because there was no Costco nor Nordstrom's within an hour's drive.
have turned down jobs that require me to move because I knew we wouldn't win the contract and I'd rather be unemployed in Colorado than in St. Louis.

Editor at a newspaper. Could be out of work soon, since no one reads newspapers anymore.

I'm a software engineer. I design and implement components of data warehousing databases, generally focused on the storage layer.

Data Security Advisor.

Well, owner of a firm that does this kind of stuff, but in the end, I get billed out sometimes too.

Motor body builder, not sure what you'd call it in the US , basically build light truck bodies. Still trying to work out what I want to do( now 45 yo)

Until very recently, I worked on powertrain control systems at one of the larger auto companies. Now I push kids around and do what I can to make their lives miserable by giving them tests and assigning homework. But I do get to play with Legos and robots in the robotics lab.

Mostly I talk on the telephone and spend money. All too frequently through the fall and winter I had to go to the field and kick butts (in the polite, non-judgmental, non-percussive way approved by society to get people to do their jobs).

Well now it's REALLY time for me to go to my REAL job. Have fun tonight, but don't stay up too late!:D I'll be watching!:)

worked as a baiter on an Alaskan crabber, retired before I got my master rating.

I run linux servers, I write code, I teach people how to fly airplanes, and I do whatever else I convince myself could be profitable.

Farmer/Rancher. Raise corn and soybeans and have 150 head of cows that are busy having babies right now.

I still read newspapers. I much prefer real newspaper to on-line.

Job: Systems Engineer (mostly military ATC and landing systems)

I'm CTO for a small defense simulation contractor.

For the most part, I make bike wheels but if one of you smart guys can help me find an embedded engineer to work on a potentially aviation related product please let me know. I've been looking for a good one for about a year now with very limited success.

Put another vote in for Linux:

Still, when this poll was run at BeechTalk, almost everyone turned out to be a construction company owner. The fork-tailed doctor killer morphed into a conventional-tailed construction company owner killer (with G36).

.NET/Java Sofware developer, for a hunting license system, cost accounting for wildfires and an ecological monitoring system are my big three projects.

From many of the responses so far, it sounds like we could start our own technology company.

EMC engineer (electromagnetic compatibility). Provide in-house consulting on standards and design and serve on industry and standards (national/international) committees trying to influence regulators and new standards. In my spare time I'm the President of the IEEE EMC Society (2012-2013). Oh, and I fly light airplanes for fun.

piano player in a brothel

Sorry Greg, I know better. Saw your recent posting on the RMOUG list. Damaged shoulder's keeping me from Training Days this year. Way too much pain and possible surgery soon.
