One of our esteemed members refers to himself as a yellow belt, private pilot, ASEL.
As I struggled toward my PPL, I had also rated my progress using the martial arts ranking system.
I put the completion of ground school and the basics of making an airplane go as a yellow belt, white belt before that. First solo gives a blue belt. Leaving the pattern on your own, green belt, then prepping for the check ride, brown belt. Finally, after achieving a PPL, you are a first degree black belt.
As in martial arts, a first degree black belt means you are now ready to start learning, perhaps going for your instrument rating, second degree black belt, and so on.
