We don't need no education
We don't need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave them kids alone

Hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone!
All in all it's just another brick in the wall
All in all you're just another brick in the wall.

Pink Floyd(The Wall)
"Another Brick in the Wall"

Since I retired I love this John Lennon song.

I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round,
I really love to watch them roll,
No longer riding on the merry-go-round,
I just had to let it go

Now clearing all these bricks by hand, it was so very slow
So I hoisted up a barrel and secured the rope below
But in my haste to do the job, I was too blind to see
That a barrel full of building bricks was heavier than me.

And so when I untied the rope, the barrel fell like lead
And clinging tightly to the rope I started up instead
I shot up like a rocket till to my dismay I found
That half way up I met the bloody barrel coming down.

Sick Note - The Dubliners

I was laughing my a$$ off when I heard this song for the first time a few months ago.

Where to begin?

I met a gin-soaked, bar-room queen in Memphis
She tried to take me upstairs for a ride
She had to heave me right across her shoulder
'Cause I just can't seem to drink you off my mind.

The Rolling Stones - Honky Tonk Women

Just keep me out of L.A.
Things are crazy out there
From people that I been meetin'
Seems I got to beware

So take it nice and easy
Leave the coals in the pit
Don't let your mind Post Toastee
Like a lot of my friends did

Where the eagle glides ascending
There's an ancient river bending
Down the timeless gorge of changes
Where sleeplessness awaits
I searched out my companions,
Who were lost in crystal canyons
When the aimless blade of science
Slashed the pearly gates.

Neil Young - Thrasher

'Scuse me while I kiss this guy"
or
'Scuse me while I kiss the sky"

Purple Haze - Hendrix

Put another log on the fire
Cook me up some bacon and some beans
Go out to the car and change the tire
Wash my socks and see my old blue jeans
You can fill my pipe and go and fetch my slippers
Boil me up,another pot of tea
Put another log on the fire
And come and tell me why you're leaving me.

Come and sit down at my feet
Cause I like it when you're sweet
And you know it ain't feminine to fight.

--Tompall Glaser, "Put Another Log in the Fire"
(Beware if you google it, it's sorta twangy. OK, it's a lot twangy. But funny! This is just one verse.)

Many have I loved - Many times been bitten
Many times I've gazed along the open road.
Many times I've lied - Many times I've listened
Many times I've wondered how much there is to know.

Led Zeppelin - Over the Hills and Far Away

Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings, I thought I thought of everything
No navigator to find my way home
Unladened, empty and turned to stone
The soul intention is learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try

Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

"Learning to Fly"

They don't even know me,
they never really gave me a chance.
They threw my ass on the bathroom wall,
I'm thinking 'bout moving to France.
The last mile is miles away and I'm on my way out of the game.
You don't know what they made me do and I'm not permitted to say.

Pepper - Faceplant

One question still remains, how much more art can we take?
I'll let you know when the medication wears off.

NOFX - Seeing Double at the Triple Rock

Nauga,
who has been to Minnesota without a drinkin' quota

Where's the fire, what's the hurry about?
You'd better cool it off before you burn it out
You've got so much to do
And only so many hours in a day

But you know that when the truth is told
That you can get what you want or you can just get old
You're gonna kick off before you even
Get halfway through
When will you realize, Vienna waits for you

Billy Joel, Vienna

Life is too damned short to keep worrying about keeping the house spotless and the yard in perfect condition.
Too many things I want to do, and pretty soon I'm going to be too old to do them.
Time to start doing what I want to do instead of what everyone expects me to do.

I like the chorus to John Cougar Mellencamp's "Minutes to Memories:"

Days turn to minutes
And minutes to memories
Life sweeps away the dreams
That we have planned
You are young and you are the future
So suck it up and tough it out
And be the best you can

And from one of the verses, I love these lines:

He fell asleep with his head against the window
He said an honest man's pillow is his peace of mind

A-well-a, everybody's heard about the bird
Bird, bird, bird, b-bird's the word

Top Gun you've lost that lovin feeling, that lovin feeling.

Well you can’t sleep in my bed no more
Well you can’t ride in my car
I won’t let you cook for me baby
It’s never gonna get that far

Gonna send you back to
Where the hell It was you came
Then I’m gonna get this tattoo
Changed to another girls name

Girl it ain’t fun no more
I Don’t know what to say
The honeymoon is over baby
It’s never gonna be that way again

Well you can’t borrow my shirts no more
You can’t make love to me
This ain’t gonna be your gig no more
Ain’t the way it’s gonna be
I should have left you baby
Back in that last town
Cause the kinda fool you made me girl
I’ll never live it down

Can I tell you something
Got to tell you one thing
If you expect the freedom
That you say is yours
Prove that you deserve it
Help us to preserve it
Or being free will just be
Words and nothing more

"Be mindful of the prayers you send
Pray hard but pray with care
For the tears that you are crying now
Are just your answered prayers"

"Then she drew the curtains down
And said, "When will you ever learn
That what happens there beyond the glass
Is simply none of your concern?
God has given you but one heart
You are not a home for the hearts of your brothers

And God don't care for your benevolence
Anymore than he cares for the lack of it in others
Nor does he care for you to sit
At windows in judgement of the world He created
While sorrows pile up around you
Ugly, useless and over-inflated"

Early in the morning sunlight
Soaring on the wings of dawn
Here I'll live and die with my wings in the sky
And I won't come down no more

Higher than a bird I'm flying
Crimson skies of ice and fire
Borne on wings of steel I have so much to feel
And I won't come down no more

Sail on, sail on, I will rise each day to meet the dawn
So high, so high
I've climbed the mountains of the sky
Without my wings you know I'd surely die
I found my freedom flyin' high
I've climbed the mountains of the sky

Floating on a cloud of amber
Searching for the rainbow's end
Earth so far below me,
I'm here alone, free
I can't come down no more

A-well-a, everybody's heard about the bird
Bird, bird, bird, b-bird's the word...

Does anyone else remember the bits Steve Allen did on the Tonight Show where he'd read song lyrics as if they were serious poems?

I have a memory of him doing that song. Though I might have dreamt it.

Now he lives in the islands, fishes the pilin's
And drinks his green label each day
He's writing his memoirs and losing his hearing
But he don't care what most people say.

Jimmy Buffett, "He went to Paris"

This old porch is like a big old red and white hereford bull
Standing under a mesquite tree
Out in agua dulce
And he just keeps on playing hide and seek
With that hot august sun
Just a-sweatin' and a-pantin'
Cause his work is never done

Lyle Lovett/Robert Earle Keene - This Old Porch/The Front Porch Song

Jimmy Buffett, "He went to Paris"
Great song as are many of Jimmy's.

Man...or Astroman? - Lo Batt

Nauga,
tangled up in sine waves

Days grow shorter and the nights are getting long
Feels like we're running out of time
Every day it seems much harder tellin' right from wrong
You got to read between the lines

Don't get discouraged, don't be afraid, we can
Make it through another day
Make it worth the price we pay

The Good Book says it's better to give than to receive
I do my best to do my part
Nothin' in my pockets I got nothin' up my sleeve
I keep my magic in my heart

Keep up your spirit, keep up your faith, baby
I am counting on you
You know what you've got to do

Fight the good fight every moment
Every minute every day
Fight the good fight every moment
It's your only way

All your life you've been waiting for your chance
Where you'll fit into the plan
But you're the master of your own destiny
So give and take the best that you can

You think a little more money can buy your soul some rest
You'd better think of something else instead
You're so afraid of being honest with yourself
You'd better take a look inside your head

Nothing is easy, nothing good is free on earth
But I can tell you where to start
Take a look inside your heart
There's an answer in your heart

Fight the good fight every moment
Every minute every day
Fight the good fight every moment
Make it worth the price we pay

Every moment of your lifetime
Every minute every day
Fight the good fight every moment
Make it worth the price we pay

I don't mind the sun sometimes, the images it shows
I can taste you on my lips and smell you in my clothes
Cinnamon and sugary and softly spoken lies
You never know just how you look through other people's eyes

Butthole Surfers - chorus from Pepper

As far as my eyes can see
There are shadows approaching me
And to those I left behind
I wanted you to know
You've always shared my deepest thoughts
You follow where I go

And, oh, when I'm old and wise
Bitter words mean little to me
Autumn winds will blow right through me
And someday in the mist of time
When they asked me if I knew you
I'd smile and say you were a friend of mine
And the sadness would be lifted from my eyes
Oh, when I'm old and wise

As far as my eyes can see
There are shadows surrounding me
And to those I leave behind
I want you all to know
You've always shared my darkest hours
I'll miss you when I go

And, oh, when I'm old and wise
Heavy words that tossed and blew me
Like autumn winds that will blow right through me
And someday in the mist of time
When they ask you if you knew me
Remember that you were a friend of mine
As the final curtain falls before my eyes

HOLE IN THE GROUND
(Ted Dicks / Myles Rudge)

Bernard Cribbins - 1962

There I was, a-diggin' this 'ole
'Ole in the ground, so big and sort o' round it was
And there was I, diggin' it deep
It was flat at the bottom and the sides were steep
When along comes this bloke in a bowler
Which he lifted and scratched his 'ead
Woooh, he looked down the 'ole
Poor demented soul and he said

"Do you mind if I make a suggestion?

Don't dig there, dig it elsewhere
Your digging it round and it ought to be square
The shape of it's wrong, it's much too long
And you can't put hole where a hole don't belong"

I ask, what a liberty, eh?
Nearly bashed him right in the bowler

Well, there was I, a-stood in me 'ole
Shovellin' earth for all that I was worth, I was
And there was 'im, standin' up there
So grand and official with his nose in the air
So I gave him a look sort of sideways
And I leaned on me shovel and sighed
Woooh, I lit me a fag
And havin' took a drag I replied

I just couldn't bear to dig it elsewhere
I'm diggin' it round 'cos I don't want it square
And if you disagree, it doesn't bother me
That's the place where the 'oles gonna be

Well there we were, discussing this 'ole
'Ole in the groud, so big and sort o' round
It's not there now, the ground's all flat
And beneath it is the bloke in the bowler hat

And that's that!

Sort of a downer, but Andy's voice is crushingly raw on this one.

I Can Feel Your Pain - Manchester Orchestra

Well I watched your black tied family
Rise up from graves near cemeteries
That I have not been to since you goodbye
And I drank another simile
And compared your Jesus to a thief
He took my bones and turned them into bread.
Cause I can feel your pain, in my bones, in my bones.
I was scared to call your mother
For news that you weren't getting better
Well my God, what the hell am I supposed to do?
And I ran off and ran on to something
That I swore was everything but beautiful
I only say that word for you
Cause I can feel your pain, in my bones, in my bones.
And I can feel your pain, deep in my bones, deep in my bones.
And hallelujah to the one in our bones
And hallelujah to the one that we love

I'll just toss a couple from Red Wanting Blue, one of the best bands in the country right now. Their front man, Scott Terry is by far one of the best live performers I've seen in many years. They're worth seeing, if you can.

And lyrically this is probably their best...

Hey there, fellas. My name is Death
So when you see me coming
Better hold your breath

Some call me the repo man ‘cause I seem to collect where ever I am
I’m often called the big finale
I’ve got a tendency for bringing the curtain down
And I can’t help my reputation precedes me
Like clouds before the storm
You’ll run for cover, believe me
And I start every conversation the same, saying…

CHORUS
Hey there, fellas. My name is Death
So when you see me coming
Better hold your breath
‘Cause I’m your last gasp
I’m your sweet retreat
I’m the baddest mother****er you will ever meet
‘Cause I’m free to come and go as I please
I wear the seven deadly sins upon my sleeve
And I’m dying to meet you now
I’ve got a handshake you’ll never forget, my friend
I’m the end. My name is Death

Now, don’t think I’m all work and no play
I’ve just got a knack for taking people’s breath away
It’s not to say exceptions can’t be made
When the Stones wrote me a song, I cut ‘em a break
And I can’t help I’m dressed best in black
Even better than the late great Johnny Cash
And I shot more men in Reno than he ever did. I told ‘em…

CHORUS

I’ve got a million weapons and ways to use ‘em
From nuclear power to drugs and boozing
But my favorite just might be the element of surprise. I whisper…

CHORUS
I’ve got a handshake you’ll never forget
And I mean no disrespect
But if you see me coming, better run

‘Cause my name is Death

We got twenty five rifles
just to keep
the population down.

Revolution Blues by Neil Young

I love the lyrics of songs by The Cramps and Meat Puppets - there's too many from them for me to choose as "favorite."

As for new stuff, I like this little snippet from The Growlers song "Love Test":

You can test a woman for honesty,
You can go and test her for goodness.
But it's a wicked game,
And a crying shame,
There's no way to give her a love test.

I may be accused
Of bein' confused
But I'm average weight for my height
My phil-o-so-phy
Like color TV
Is all there in black and white
