You kidding? My Pilot III is still my #1 GPS for situational awareness to and remind me where the MOAs are located. A 196 would be a New and Wonderfule GPS!

Certifiction? Right now. Certification? Never. If FAA won't certify an aviation-specific GPS, the iPad will never be certified.

While the iPad is slick, I still use it as secondary to my 296.

I find the iPad interface/reliability to be a bit too flakey, and find the airspace presentation to be better on the Garmin. You don't just zoom in and out, but features are layered, scale, and appear or declutter depending on the zoom level.

I keep the old Garmin in the back in case the more recent vintage Gramin breaks. A backup for my backup. If there's nothing wrong with a little redundancy, there is nothing wrong with a lot.

+1. My 496 backs up my G1000. When in IMC, the 496 is on and accessible. The 496 is a much more capable backup then the whisky compass I have and the backup AI in my plane only has 45 minutes of backup battery power. Yes I travel with an iPad as well but I don't trust it as a tool to help me keep the wings level in the soup.

And while I am proud to be a child of the magenta line, I also fly through the Utah Test and Training Range on a regular basis which has a less than reliable GPS signal so I'm sharp on other forms of navigation. That said, I figure if the global GPS system goes down at the same time my G1000 goes dark surviving the rest of the rest of the flight is the least of my problems.

My GPS-90 sits in the closet gathering dust ... :(

The 496 is on the yoke. The iPad stays closed most of the flight. I might reference for airport info and I definately use it for flight planning.
