Hey everybody. I'm trying to price out an engine overhaul (or factory new) for a Lycoming O-540-B4B5 engine in CA, NV, or AZ. Anyone know of a good shop, preferably in CA? I know lack of parts has a lot of overhauls backed up several months but I figured I'd start looking now.

You should probably tell us where you fall on the good/fast/cheap scale with your priorities :)

good/cheap: Corona Engines, Corona, CA
fast/cheap: One Stop, Oceanside CA

Sadly I don't know any good/fast/expensives anymore. Try Victor or Lycon? :) Others may have more recent anecdata.

I’ve been happy with the work and help I’ve gotten from LyCon. I’m not sure where they fall on the time/price spectrum however.

Tim's Aircraft in Long Beach... Know a few folks that have used them, and are happy.

I have heard good things about LyCon too.

A few months ago I spoke with Tim about doing a Northpoint XP470 (P-Ponk) for me. He said he may be retiring in the near future, and might not be around to support it. Caveat emptor...

I have a Northpoint XP470 (P-Ponk) on order from LyCon. I'm expecting delivery sometime in October or November. I thought their prices were legit, and their delivery estimate reasonable. My late helicopter mentor, who had been in the business for a long time before he died in a crash, had all his engine work done at LyCon. If it was good enough for him, it's certainly good enough for me!

Johnston Aircraft, Tulare Airport. Focus is ag planes, so it's now their slow season. Did a tear down inspection for me last year, good folks! Tell Lionel I said hi!

One Stop has gone out, from what I am told.

check out Aircraft Engine Specialists in Chandler, while you’re checking.

NevadaAircraftEngines.com , I've used him for two O-540-B2C5-A1D5 overhauls. Same engine 13yrs and 2400hrs apart.
He is in Henderson NV. Overhauls only, not on airport, does not do remove and replace.

"under new management" --I assume the former honcho retired. The new biz has some generic name now (aircraft specialties? something odd like that) -- teflon for the brain :)

Them going out / under new management, is a good thing. They were churning out hot garbage before the euthanasia.

Johnston Aircraft overhauled my TIO540-AK1A about 1,700 hours ago. I have been very pleased.

Yeah, not my favorite place. However, they gave everyone what they asked for -- they *could* make a quality motor, if you asked them to -- but you had to specify the parts, limits, accessories and micromanage the build spec. Everyone appears to have asked them to build a cheap motor instead, which they could also do with aplomb. :)
