Virgin passengers: Off the right wing SpaceShipTwo is flying in formation with us!

Re: Virgin passengers: Off the right wing SpaceShipTwo is flying in formation with u

Not to be a killjoy, but how is that different from the airliner that was diverted to intercept the Cirrus about which the FAA got its collective nose out of joint?

Outside of US airspace?

After reading...guess not.

How cool! I didn't know SpaceShipTwo had flown into SFO. That approach is unmistakable.

Methinks they were low enough out over the ocean to be in Class G, although the bay tour is in the Bravo(?). Been there, Flew that.

I wonder who was flying WhiteKnightTwo. Mike Melville?

I think you can hear Sir Richard talking on the airliner in the video.

If they got a waiver from the FAA, that would be sufficient.

Looked like it was off the left wing to me.

Funny. I realized that right before I saw your post.

Never take directions from a pilot with directional dyslexia. "Cherokee is 10 miles....uhhhh......EAST!"

Wouldn't 91.111(c) apply here if it was on a commercial for hire flight?

§ 91.111 Operating near other aircraft.

(c) No person may operate an aircraft, carrying passengers for hire, in formation flight.

Re: Virgin passengers: Off the right wing SpaceShipTwo is flying in formation with u

sounded to me like the flight was a ride for the journalists, not a commercial for hire flight.

Re: Virgin passengers: Off the right wing SpaceShipTwo is flying in formation with u

... this reaffirms my decision to send all of my transcon business to Virgin .

It looks like a staged photo op, there is a Baron in the picture with the side door that appears to be off, taking photos of WK2 up against the Virgin Atlantic airliner.

It was; it was a media day.

Yeah... But that makes their "let the media deplane first" comment toward the end of the second one awfully weird. :dunno:

Employees of the airline, I would think.

1) The Airbus was not on a regular scheduled (route) flight.
2) The whole thing was planned, and most likely waivered.
3) Both aircraft were in communication with each other and ATC.
4) White Knight (and the photo plane)probably formed up on the Airbus, not the other way around.

The view from the cockpit of the the A320. Note who is taking pictures with his phone towards the end. We know he's seen a few memorable scenes:
