The airport is private, owned by the town, and is only used by Penobscot Island Air Service(out of KRKD Knox County Regional Airport). But who'd want to fly there on a day like this?

WOW. As long as you're coming in from the left it wouldn't be so bad. Something tells me it would take a lot more than that to scare off the Penobscot guys! Take a look at these, Harley, especially #5.

Awesome shots. Regarding Penobscot Island Air -- Kevin, Robb and the others fly to Vinalhaven, Matinicus, etc. in just about any weather. Grocery orders and U.S. Mail have to get there from the mainland.

I stayed on Vinalhaven for a week or so many years ago before I was a pilot. It was a lot of fun. The house we were in was in the family of a woman I was dating and was right on the Water. It was a very old house and being there was like going back in time. The house had essentially remained the way it was when built. I think it was built between 1900 - 1930, but it was many years ago and I don't remember.

Got there my ferry as flying was just a glint in my eye at that point.

Anthony: Was the lady a Dyer(generations-old family out there)? Les Dyer was president of Maine Lobstermens Association for many years. Not much has changed on VH. The native families stay; not many "outsiders" move there.
