That's to raise and lower the boom.
This plane is set up to tow banners, using a rigid boom (hinged just behind the mains, and ending with a hook about halfway down the fuse), rather than a grapnel on a line. When it's time to make the banner pick-up run, the pilot lowers the boom so that the hook is hanging a few feet below the tailwheel.

Safer, I guess, than tossing a grapnel out the door, but with the boom, you have to get a lot closer to the banner strap (or whatever it's called) when you dive to snag it. Slightly more chance of catching it on the mains instead of the hook (which would be bad, LOL).

LOL, thanks. It's too fast, but I wanted it to fit the music. :D Eventually I may post the photos online as an album... they're worth closer scrutiny if you're at all interested in that stuff.

Very KOOL !!!!

I really liked the transition between color/BW and the music change....:yesnod:

Wow!! What a fantastic way to spend a Saturday!! Thanks for sharing the video.

Note to self: Learn to paint airplanes in exchange for time piloting them. lol

Great video. Can't wait for more.

Nice Vid! You did a good job putting it together; enjoyed it!

Glad you like it. Wasn't sure if that was too cheesy or not, but there was a lot of good Stearman footage, and the piano break in the music got me thinking of a way to add some more "flavor" to part of it.
Too bad, though, that I didn't capture the video at the right aspect ratio in the first place... that's why the phony scratches can be seen on the matte portion of the image. Couldn't fix it with the editing software I use, either (VStudio, nothing fancy).
By the time I realized this, there was no way I was going to re-capture and re-edit all that stuff... oh well, lesson learned.

Who'da thunk it? And to think it all started with a joke I made after we'd finished the 2-33... :D
I've been getting a lot of funny ideas about this; might even get an airbrush rig and try my hand at some more "painterly" stuff. As a resident pilot pointed out to me Tuesday when he saw me starting the second Bird Dog, the shark's mouth thing is getting out of hand here at 47N: "It wont be special anymore! How about some, y'know, nose art?" He's right. There are myriad possibilites with proper nose art- everything from skulls to a photo of someone's best gal, and everything in between. And that sort of thing is another large potential "market", if more challenging. I used to draw and paint quite a bit; I think I could get the hang of the airbrush.

It would be cool to actually get paid to do this, but I'd just spend the money on flying anyway...

As far as these acts of vandalism go- three colors, no shading- it's really very simple. The hard part, even banging out simple "Flying Tiger" knockoffs, is the creative visualization, which is where I'm lacking compared to a true artist. I'm more of a draftsman than an artist. But again, it can be done satisfactorily by someone who's never attempted it before.
