gopro video KVNY 16R Pattern

Hello All,

I had a chance to test out a mount I made for my GoPro camera on a flight at KVNY. This was my first test and also my first time ever using editing software so the clip is raw aside from just clipping the time to shorten the video. As expected I see the "Jello" effect of the scenery due to the rolling shutter. Also the prop has the rolling shutter affect but this can be fixed with a filter.

I shot a video today at 60FPS and will see if that helps with the "jello" effect. The mount is very rigid, but engine vibrations and wing vibrations with flaps out are not helping any...

Video was in HD, but for some reason did not upload in HD... Ill have to see why

Let me know what you think...

Think the upload thing is a setting in the uploader tool.

Jello and prop could be helped by stuffing a neutral density filter in front of the camera. Lower light, lower shutter speed. More blur.

Any reason for the sidestep to the right after departure?

Enjoyed the hop around the pattern at VNY. Last logbook entry there for me was in the early 90s. Looked like a nice day out there.

Man I'd have a hell of a time not landing on that displaced threshold!

I am working on an ND filter fix as well as a Polarizer option. I know there are companys that make them, but chances are I will make my own solution.

As for the Sidestep there was a daparting plane on 16L as well so I scooted over bit as I tend to have the problem with drifting on climb out. When on 16L, I drift left a bit so I can see 16R a bit to monitor if im drifting back..

Oh ans its in HD now... The problem was that I checked it too soon... it took time for YT to encode all the versions and I just checked and HD is there...

It was a nice day to fly for sure. I had my second Solo and got it on film. I flew yesterday with the Gopro at 60FPS and hoped to get my 3rd SOlo in, but it was blowing 15kt and 90 degree X winds so no dice on letting me solo... A few landings were slightly downwind and both myslef and an RV4 landed fast and long and we both ended up on the last turn off within seconds of each other...

Hey DenverPilot,

The video I show is of the first flight of the day. Since my FBO is on the side of 16R, I usualy take off 16R on the first flight and land on 16L for the remainder of my practice. It was a rareocurance that I relanded on 16R due to traffic. The last flight on the camera that day has my second Solo on 16L... I have not uploaded it yet but plan to tonight... Unfortunatley I did not have the mount finished for my 1st solo...

I am hoping to come into work late tomorrow so I cna get the 3rd out of the way tomorrow before the wind gets going. Yesterday was a bust for the 3rd, but I at least got some good 90 degree Xwind practice...

Thanks for the Congrats....

It is in HD now. YT takes some time to process and makes it available at lower rez first.

Wow, those camera's are awesome. Everytime I watch these vids the HD is so clear.

Very nice video and flying, thanks for sharing.

Nice video! How did you mount your GoPro to the plane? One of these days after I get my PPL I'll fly at VNY. My dad lives down the street in Canoga Park.

I used a mount of my own design. I made a mount a few years back to work on my Hanglider and it worked so well that I recently I modified the design a bit to work on a Cessna. So far it fits every Cessna with a strut I have come across by walking on the ramp. My goal is to get a little bit more time on it testing and then see if people are interested in buying some... It is all CNC machined so I need to make a fair amount for it to be cheap enough for people to afford...

Best regards,

Marc

Saw a fellow at the fuel pump. He had a Cherokee with two cameras mounted outside (wing and tail) using just regular suction mounts. I was a bit surprised. He said they held pretty well but he had lost a camera once

Yah suction mounts are just rolling the dice for sure... But If you can afford it then I guess it works so long as nobody gets hurt when they depart the airplane and hit ground... Just seems too risky to me and I can barely afford to fly and take lessons let alone afford to replace cameras.

I have a few ideas for cantelevered wing planes such as the Cherokee. My friend has an Alon Aircoupe and I may see what I can come up with for him.

Modify a fuel cap. Works for high wing also. Course there is that one sticky wicket re screwing around with airplane parts :D

Hey Alfadog,

WOW you had the same idea as me... Only problem I worry about is adding an electronic component to a fuel cap. Also if somebody forgets to tighten it and then something happens they could say the forces from the camera mount caused it to turn and come off... Just seems super risky modding a fuel cap. I think the FAA might have issue with this one...

But a possible idea none the less... It was what I was offering to my friend for a quick fix on his Alon...

Great minds and all that. Seriously though, leave the cap alone. No way the FAA is going to like that and it is not worth the risk. I was thinking more that you do not know what airflow over the camera will do as far as loosening the cap but the electrical issue is another.

Try Camarillo (KCMA). 4,000 feet of pavement before you get to a threshold on RWY 26. With my regular base leg turn and base-to final turn, there's still pavement outside the pattern I fly.

The other end (08) is only 1,000 feet before the threshold. 6,000 foot runway, 11,000 feet worth of pavement.

Dover AFB's Runway 14 has 4250' of displaced threshold. I know civilian aircraft are allowed to land there, but the landing fees are exorbitant. I also think that 14 is off limits to civilians, but I'm not sure.

Hello All,

I just looked at some footage where I shot at 60 FPS and 720p and it looks much better then 1080P and 30 FPS. The added sampling rate removed almost all of the Jello Effect. Much smoother Video and Prop looks much nicer. Still an ND filter would pame the prop look even better.

I will upload this weekend. I plan to fly today and hope I get SOLO #3 out of the way so I am free to practice in the patern without the added fee of an instructor...:goofy:

where do you fly out of?

Get back to us when you are 'off at Foxtrot' on 16L :)

(BTW: I'm based at VNY and have a T206H, so if you want to go flying, send me a PM :)

Thank you for the amazing offer, I'll definitely take you up on that. Never been in any other Cessna than a 172 so something different would be great to experience.

I tried to fly today but when I arrived, the plane was inadvertently given to someone else and I got moved to a different plane. Unfortunately my instructor wants all 3 solos on the same plane so it was a bust for me so I chose not to fly; Hopefully next week.

I'm flying to Mojave in the morning for "Plane Crazy Saturday" + Scaled Composite's Open House. On the off chance you read this tonight and want to come along, my hangar is near the observation area (off Woodley) and I'll be leaving around 9am. Gimme a call or text me @ 818.468.5206 if you want to come along!

I was practicing short-field landings with my instructor in KSMO on one very windy day and managed to get off on B1 after landing runway 3. Does that count? :D
