Hi everybody,

after my wife and I had passed our PPL checkrides in St. Augustine, Florida, we started right the next day for a flight along the east coast (another video to come  ) north bound.

This is a video, containing the footage and the still images which we took during the flight along the Hudson. It was absolutely amazing and felt even slightly surreal. The flight took place on the 21st of April.

Sadly, we had to fly back to Germany last Saturday. :frown3:

Cheers,

Oliver

Great Video! I'd like to hear more about your RAM mount and GoPro camera setup. Very nice composition.

BTW, I followed some of your threads on preparing for the flight, do you have a thread or a blog where you share about your trip here in the States and your flying experience?

Thanks for sharing.

Oliver:

Thanks for posting. I really hope your US adventure was all you hoped for, and more. If you have a chance, please share some stories!

Ho Rob, hi SCCutler,

thanks for you nice comments.
Please find attached a screenshot with the route, as well as three pictures of the GoPro setup. I had ordered everything from GPSCity.
As you can see, the mount is attached with a standard hose clamp - I still don't know if this is legal or not, so anybody who follows my example does this at his own risk.
The video quality of the GoPro HD is great, however I had most of the time issues with vibration, resulting in a nasty jello effect. The amount of this effect seems to increase with airspeed and changes with changing settings of the mount, so I need to do some further research on it.

I have no blog for this journey, however I will write up a short report, with another video and a link to the pictures within the next week or so.

Sadly, the evailable time was very short, so that we could only focus on our main goals - flying to Kitty Hawk and flying through New York. We left St. Augustine on Monday evening and came back on Thursday evening, which means we did the whole trip to New York and back in just three days.
The flight to the Florida west coast (Cedar Key) took place on Friday.

My wife and I had a great time in your great country. :D
We are already making plans for our next year's vacation - we want to rent a plane and camping gear somewhere in southern California, book a mountain flying course and fly all the way up the west coast to the Canadian border or even further and then fly back along the mountains to southern California. :D :D
Sounds like a lot of flying? Indeed - however, I you rent a plane for 18 - 20 days and have to fly each day three hours, what is the limit of most rental companies, at an average speed of 100 kts, you have to travel quite a distance... :yesnod: :D

Cheers,

Oliver

Great trip. Saw your other Video online too with your wife's spin training,.. you guys sure did learn a lot in the time you were here.

Hi Rob,

yes, we learned a lot + it was fun, too.
Btw.: I just saw that you live in Lansdale - we stayed in Smoketown the night after our flight through NY. :D

Cheers,

Oliver

For whatever reason the music and video were choppy on my computer. Even let it cache completely, let it play through once in the background with speakers off, and went to it again. Same result.

Vimeo plays the Video in HD, for what your computer might be too slow.
I have also uploaded the video to Youtube, where you can set the resolution yourself:

I would appreciate your feedback whether the video works at Youtube for you.

Cheers,

Oliver

On Youtube 360 and 480 are video and audio smooth.
720 is audio smooth, but video choppy.

Worked fine for me.

No sound, but great video -- though speed seemed doubled.

It takes awhile for electrons to go all the way up to that remote spot in Michigan....

:D

played fine for me, with music and all. The video speed is increased a little so we can see the flight in the short timeframe, otherwise, playing the video at regular rate would have taken up my lunch-hour and a LOT more memory.

Want to see a fast 152,.. check out his spin video. That has to be the fastest taxi and takeoff ever in a 152. :)

We hate you!

It was in our plans to make that run on the 16th, but weather screwed up our plans completely.

Excellent presentation.

Oliver, for what it is worth, with a little hunting, you can likely find a place from which you can rent a plane for traveling without the 3-hour daily minimums...

...maybe even something a little faster.

I expected this to be an issue which is negotiable. I would also come in handy, if they would allow us to land on grass strips, which was prohibited by the flight school from which we have rented the plane this time.
As we also would like to combine this journey with some hiking, it would be great if we wouldn't have to fly 3 hours each day.

You would just need to average at least 3 hours a day. It could be 6 hours one day and 0 hours the next. If you fly less than an average of 3 hours per day that you have the plane, you still have to pay for the hours.

If you want to fly more than the minimum they would be happy to let you pay for the time.

Hi Barb!

You would just need to average at least 3 hours a day. [...]

I know this. It's just that if we don't fly a day at all, maybe have some bad weather the days after, we would have to fly 9 hours on the third day. Not that this a too big of a problem, however we would always have to stay focused on flying. 3 hours of flying each day accumulates to quite a distance over almost three weeks, which might be difficult to press them into a reasonable route within the western US-states.

Well... still almost one year to go. We might also want to combine this journey with a one week backcountry flying course, as it is provided by some flight schools.

Another option, my personal favorite, might be to fly from the LA area all the way up to Alaska and back. But then again, I don't know if and which rental companies give their planes away for such a trip. I also read that the weather up there is quite specific, as is the terrain!?

So - lots of research to do on what we want to do, what the options are and what lies within our skills and capabilities.

Cheers,

Oliver
