•On 374 occasions from May 23 to June 23, 2004, JetBlue released jets from its New York and Long Beach, Calif., maintenance facilities without performing required work on their in-flight entertainment systems. The FAA said JetBlue flew passengers with planes in "unairworthy condition" and fined the airline $49,000.

Wait....an entertainment system can cause a plane to be unairworthy?

OK really, all of 14CFR needs to be trashed and rewritten, every FAA bureaucrat taken out back and shot, and the whole thing needs to be revamped.

If the tests are to ensure that stray radiated carriers are not interfering with flight critical electronics that is a fair expectation and requirement.

I once sat on the ramp --delayed at least 25 minutes -- as we all waited eagerly for maintenance to board and apply duct tape to a tray table that would not lock in the upright position.

I agree.

You know, if you have a clock in your panel that doesn't work, and you don't put an "INOP" sticker on it, your plane is not airworthy, right? And even if you do put the sticker on, you're not legal for IFR without a functioning panel mounted clock...

Yep.......

Yes, because the clock I have on the three other instruments, on my phone, on my kitchen timer, or on my pocket PC aren't good enough, yet they all match UTC time given to me by the satellites and ATC.

This is why the FAA needs to be dismantled and rebuilt.

I have a pretty nice watch on my wrist -- oh, shoot -- that's not "Panel mount"...

I knew that. But here is a question for you.

You are flying IFR in IMC. Your FAA required clock breaks, you still have a westbend timer and your watch. Should you declare an emergency, go to the nearest airport in VMC, land and get it repaired, or if possible get yourself out of the IMC, cancel IFR and continue the flight VFR, or just ignore it and finish the flight as filled and get it fixed on the ground?

Since the clock failed on final, it really doesn't make any difference.

You didn't list the best option:

Post your dilemna on PoA and autopilot hold while you read the 342 posts, culiminating with Rotor&Wing slamming Ron Levy after smigaldi posts a wildly inappropriate internet meme image.

Must have an "R" next to it on the equipment list in the POH. :D

The FAA required clock must have failed after landing...

Don't drive angry.

But what about that cellphone in the bag under seat 19F? Or (GASP) that laptop in the seatback pocket.

Swissair 111.

We have a winner.

Some of the stuff goes overboard, but disabling an entertainmnet system that's subject to an AD for one of the above is reasonable.

Didn't a problem with the entertainment system bring down a Swissair flight a while back?

Which is the important part. As you know, I was once bit because my clock's time was inaccurate. Verifying the accuracy of my time source is now something I do before the engine is started.

So why are we blaming USA Today which, by the way, was far from the only news organization to report on this?

I still think USA Today is the most popular newspaper among the passenger, and pilots too for that matter. I can tell by which ones have been opened...
