For those of you that were at Gaston's last year you may recall a very nice restored Piper J3 Cub that flew in from the AR/LA border. The pilot gave Nick and I rides and it was a great experience. I took a picture of it and showed it to a friend of mine. She wanted a copy and said she wanted to try something with it. Well, she called the other day and ask me to stop by. This is what she had for me and I must say it turned out very nice. It was cut out with a plasma cutter using 1/16" metal. It measures 25.5" wide and 18" tall.

That was easily the best-looking Cub I've ever seen. I actually asked the guy if it was a brand-new Legend Cub because it looked brand-new. Nope, it was just a VERY well-restored 1946 Piper. Wow!

Kate got a ride too. I think she liked it.

Very cool!

That was the plane that ended my hatred of both sticks and tailwheels in one motion. I'm still not planning on the TW endorsement at anytime, but I don't fear sticks anymore at all.

Great plane! Great artwork!

I gotta try that some day. I had lunch with RottyDaddy aka Sean yesterday and we was very enthusiastic about tail draggers and like. Made me a bit jealous that all I have flown is conventional gear trainers and bigger. Smalles plane I ever flew was a Piper Tomahawk.

That is really great.

I spoke with the Cub owner at some length as he needed a set of tie downs and I had an extra set. He and his wife (?) are really great folks and I hope they decide to join us again this year.

That really is a super-sweet J3!!

Yeah, I guess I bent Scott's ear a little yesterday with my gushing about Champs, etc... I am pretty hooked.

I'm not convinced taildraggers or old ragwings in general are better overall (a silly argument), but they have an appeal that I think most pilots recognize, even if they are very happy with their newer trikes and are leery at first of handling a tailwheel or flying on fabric-covered wings.

Flying something like that is just more like aviating as opposed to flying, I guess... slower and lower, with less gadgets to play with or think about, you're more involved, in a way. The senses come more into play, and the brain can relax a little (but not completely). Only thing that does more of that for you would be soaring or hang-gliding, I figure. Or maybe flying choppers...thinking too much seems to be a bad idea flying those... but those things don't actually fly, everybody knows that. ;)
I think anybody who can handle a metal trike can learn to be safe on the ground and in the air in a little taildragger... the only difficulty is unlearning a few things, then it's like "why didn't I start out in one of these? This is fun! And easy!! And cheap!!" :)

Scott- I hope you get that seaplane add-on soon... preferably in an old ragwing...that's gotta be yet another whole world of fun. If you take that volunteer gig at the seaplane base at Oshkosh you will be champin' at the bit, I know it. Last year I saw a perfect J3 on straight floats there... it was a beautiful sight.

Cool artwork!

I was at a shop that uses both lasers and water cutters for such work. They had just created a dining table with an inlay of various variety of woods and different colors. Talk about gorgeous! My mind started roaming about the many things that could be done aviation related. How about a coffee table or dining table with a J-3 inlay? It's gotta look a lot better than a wagon wheel table!
