I just discovered this on a CFI site. I had not heard about it, otherwise.

4 killed in apparent mid-air collision over Everglades

Unfortunately, there's still the uninformed element being listened to by the ignorant media. Anything for a story, I suppose.

Isn't the loss bad enough? The media has to bring down aviation as a result.

I read it and watched the video, which had footage of an old woman concerned and speaking repeatedly about watching planes do "360s in the air", which she seemed very concerned about. That's about the worst I could find so far.

I was in that area over Thanksgiving weekend and watched the planes doing 360's in the air too. Only I called them steep turns. Given that it's apparently a practice area for the local schools, that's not too surprising! :) I admit, though, that I don't see what that woman brought to the story, except some sensationalism.

"Both planes were flying under visual flight rules, a common practice for that area, Bergen said."

This is one of the most subtle "let's create anxiety about light aircraft ops" things I've ever seen...seems innocuous at first, but the absence of any understanding about how VFR flight works makes it sound like some bad practice that people in that area have somehow been getting away with.

This kind of "creativity" is why a co-worker once refused to fly with me after he found out we would not be "under air traffic control" the whole time. He was appalled that anyone was allowed to "just fly around out there". :frown2:

Sometimes I think the media coverage does more damage than the accidents themselves, in terms of our image... :frown2:

At any rate, it's a darn shame, this loss of life, and probably quite preventable, as usual. Eyes outside, everybody!
