Now Mary Ann has died from complications associated with COVID.

:(

Yup, if you are vulnerable it is devastating, RIP Dawn.

Sorry to hear about Dawn Wells. But I wish there was more detailed information on exactly what she died of. Blaming every death on COVID these days happens to be a thing.

Why do you think you need more information on this? Does it matter if the final cause of death was pneumonia or heart failure?

The excess death data indicates that if anything, the Covid death toll is understated.

I want to know if it was COVID, or not. And I'm sorry, but our major media networks are outright liars and feed on sensationalism and panic. There is a special place in hell for CNN.

I'd like and quote this a million times if I could. maybe I'll try, starting now.

Why do you care if she passed away from COVID or something else? I doubt you'll find out. HIPAA and other rules. Let her rest in peace.

You are presuming that covid is the only variable. Note that we had excess deaths for a fews months 2 years ago.

edit: sure, it's fair to wonder and investigate, but the excess deaths numbers are not proof.

Citation for the excess deaths a two years ago please? You make a much better case with a citation.

My mistake... I didn't at look FormerHangle's link... I assumed it was the CDC page.
Thanks, need to scroll down to see it.
It is the same page, looking at it. My apologies.
The only thing I'll note is the Jan 2018 period looks very different from this year.
I agree something happened in late 2017/early 2018, but I've no idea what. I don't recall flu being particularly bad.

Okay, then how did the media determine how she died? They have determined it is COVID. (Do you see what I'm getting at?)

You’re assuming the media requires their reporting to be factual.

The problem is that a lot of decisions, a lot of high level decisions, are made based on reporting that may or may not be accurate or even factual. I see through it. Apparently a lot of people here see through it. But way too many people don't.

The media didn't determine how she died- someone else made that determination.
The media reported she died of complications of COVID.
I've no idea whether their reporting is correct or not. Neither do you.
I'm sorry, I don't see what you are getting at.

It doesn't bother you that disinformation and misinformation may be fed to the public? I guess not. Well it bothers me. So, I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on the subject.

Cheers.

How do you know it is disinformation?
Do you know what she died of?
Sorry, I don't know, so I really can't say if it is disinformation or not.

I have absolutely no idea. It's the source I have no confidence in.

The media is getting it from her publicist. Not sure why this is controversial. Never mind...

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dawn Wells, who played the wholesome Mary Ann among a misfit band of shipwrecked castaways on the 1960s sitcom “Gilligan’s Island,” died Wednesday of causes related to COVID-19, her publicist said. She was 82.

I included the New York Times article because the presentation is much easier to read. They got their data from the CDC. If you don't like the CDC data, you can look at the data from other countries. They almost all say the same thing, the number of excess deaths is greater than those attributed to Covid-19. There are a few countries where the excess mortality almost exactly lines up with the reports of Covid deaths. I haven't seen one where the Covid deaths were overstated.

Okay, then how did the media determine how she died? They have determined it is COVID. (Do you see what I'm getting at?)

Generally, the news people are quoting what's on the death certificate, which is determined by either the attending physician or the medical examiner, in cases where an autopsy is done or if the decedent passes outside of a hospital. As we see here, her publicist reported the cause of death.

I have absolutely no idea. It's the source I have no confidence in.

In that case, why do you even think she's dead? If you can't trust the news, then she could still be alive.

I'll be honest, I don't read the NYT or the Washington Post because...well, they won't let me. But even before they went to subscription only, I also tended to find their articles on controversial topics to be very one sided. I pretty much quit when I realized that after reading, I only knew one side of a discussion. They only inform me half as well as I'd like, so they're less than useful to me.

The media in general is lacking in effort. For example, on this topic, I only learned in the last week that flu deaths are practically non existent this year, but nobody can even explain the theories of why. Edward R Murrow is turning over in his grave over the state of newspapers today.

because the CDC stopped tracking flu stats since the 'rona hit. so the Clown News Networks report "there are no reported flu deaths this year". pretty cool, huh?

Without getting deep into the weeds re whether COVID mortality rates are over or under or justly reported, I’d like to share how Death Certificates are filled out and why COVID may not be listed as diagnosis number one. As someone who has filled out many in my professional career, I was taught and understand the rationale delineated here: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/dvs/blue_form.pdf.
If someone dies of pneumonia, sepsis, acute renal failure, thromboembolic disease, multiorgan failure syndrome, etc any of which is a direct consequence of COVID then COVID will not be listed as the primary cause of death, but is nonetheless directly responsible. “related to COVID”.
COVID is real, is deadly, is widespread and should not be part of any political debate or discussion or used as a straw man to denigrate mainstream news coverage. Those are my last words on the subject, I hope. Adios. IBTL

When I made the OP, I was hoping nobody would go there.

Mary Ann has always been my favorite.
Then don’t title the post framed within a covid reference and blame her death on covid. It always makes me feel better when I see other people suck at internet conversation and I know it’s not just me.

She was my favorite as well.

Half the cast died younger than she did of other causes, but this is an indicator that COVID is the end of the world.
