Thinking about a home security system

If they pick my place, there's a decent chance they're screwed.

Maybe a 2nd Amendment or USCCA sticker in the window would be more effective.

FYI, I'm getting golf clubs for christmas and maybe a dog.

The dog would be helpful. The 2A sticker will just let potential thieves know “You can steal guns here, too.” You can’t be home all the time.

Guns have a very good resale for ghetto goblins, you should also put apple stickers and a declared amount of cash in the house under the gun stickers, make their where to shop decisions easier

Unless you are going to SSS if you shoot one of the criminals, you very well might end up not guilty, but the system is designed to have a Monopoly on violence, so the ride to get to not guilty is going to probably cost more than whatever they steal, welcome to the brave new world
 
In NC, someone who breaks into your house is deemed to have deadly intent. You really don't want to do B&E here, you can easily be shot and the homeowner will not even get arrested. My guns are in a really good, heavy and bolted down safe. Except for the one I carry.

The stickers were a joke. I'm not putting them in my window.

So you think they’ll just clean up the dead dude and walk way never to be heard from again? Don’t think the family won’t try a civil suit with some scummy lawyer?

Most states have a castle doctrine, but unless you work for the state shooting people is know to be very expensive and time consuming
 
Bolting down is key. One of my friends on the next airport over had his gun safe carried off some time he wasn't home. His alarm was down so they had all the time in the world to move it.

I'd kinda like to see one (or even two) guys manage to get my 700+lbs safe out of the house, especially when loaded with a few hundred lbs of "stuff" in it. Getting down the stairs should be fun to watch!

My 24# mutt sounds like a 75# german shepherd. Of course once you're in the house, he'll happily let you take everything for a cookie.
 
My hats off to those rich enough to own a guard dog that bites, I think I’m living a comfortable life but nowhere affluent or connected enough for that, a true guard dog is more akin to a loaded gun than a furry friend for your kids.


A dog that will alert but run away from the intruder is the best
 
Our dog tried very hard, and successfully, to convince people that he was going to kill them and eat them, then hunt down their families and dig up their ancestors. It was kind of comical. He'd bark, but only from a safe distance. If you got within 5-6 feet he'd back up, still snarling and barking. Service and repair guys would get the treatment until we convinced him they were OK... after which he was their best friend.

GREAT watchdog. NOT a guard dog. I suspect things would have changed very quickly had any of us been actually threatened, but we never found out.

A friend that lives in the great state of Tennessee has a plan I like. It's called, 20 acres, a backhoe, & an alibi ...
 
Opposing views on home security systems.

One neighbor has some very valuable, easily fenced items, many thousand $. Good alarm system, no signs which he sees as advertising that his house will be profitable to burgle.

Two houses away, signs for an alarm system, no alarms actually installed. Theory? Signs deter burglars. He also has high $ easily fenced toys.

My old, first gen iPad is out in full sight. My two old laptops are also in plain sight. There is no information on them that is important, all important data is archived on thumb drives or CD's.
I expect that the unsophisticated burglar will grab those and go, leaving me with losses that I will not even claim to my insurance.
 
A friend of mine used to leave a 50 dollar bill laying on the kitchen table. His thought was anyone looking for quick drug money would see the 50 bucks, grab it and go.

Only problem was he would fall short on funds and grab the 50 himself....
 
I'll be with a lot of the others. I hate the nags of a full "alarm system" but like to know what's happening (even when we're home), so I've covered the place with ring cameras that also have lights. It lets me see what's goign on when I'm here, when I'm home and asleep, and when I'm away.

The wireless with solar are nice, as you can add a couple to trees that aren't far away, from the house (wifi range is pretty short), but that give you very different angles, or perhaps see further up your driveway where you can't see easily from the house.

As a bonus, I've leanred the patterns of a bunch of the wildlife here, and know what time the 4 point is going to stroll down my driveway so I 1. don't get up for it 2. get to see cool footage later.

I've had alarm systems in both this house and our last house. In fact I took the hardware and did most of the install myself when we moved. We worked with a local company that had locally based monitoring. About 18 months ago they sold to a national company, which promptly closed the local monitoring station and raised prices. We're moving soon, and leaving the hardware behind this time. I'm going to skip the monitoring and just go with some ring cameras or similar. Haven't started that research project yet, so I've been watching this thread with interest.

Technology has advanced enough that traditional alarm panels just aren't worth it any more imo. Even monitoring isn't worth much when everything can be forwarded to your phone.
