It was a bad Approach Clearance. My opinion is the pilot should have said unable and told the Controller what he needed to do. Two ATClive recordings. What say you RNAV/GPS Gurus? We don't know for sure which Navigator he had but the 'rules' would be the same. The buttonology to deal with it would differ though.
