In Ohio we don't name our storms, but real humdinngers get associated with a year. Last night we had the nastiest wind storm I've ever seen anywhere, with 75 mile/hour sustained winds. No one got hurt that I've heard (if they did it was abject stupidity, who goes out in a thing like that?) but the damage from downed trees is extensive. We have a 100 year old maple on our street that was snapped in two; part of my neighbor's maple fell on her front porch (serves her right, last big destructive storm part of that $@&$@!! thing fell on my truck!). We escaped major damage, although the yard is a real mess and we're still without power at home and may be for some time. My camera is busted, but I did get some video that I'll try and post later. Not much compared to those hurricanes, but a big deal to us. If this is what a hurricane is like, what would posses someone to stick it out? I own nothing worth subjecting myself to forces that powerful.

I think you got hit by the remnants of Ike. See the attached track and forcast track map.

If this is Ike a thousand miles away, I would not have wanted to be around for its landfall!

We had 45k winds in the Nashville area yesterday. Two folks were killed on a local golf course (Hermitage) when a tree fell and landed on their golf cart. Wind and rain can do a lot of damage.

How predictably does a golf ball fly when the winds are >45k?

Does it make sense to even try golfing in those conditions?

I've never even heard a whisper of the siren-song of golf, so I'm sure I will never understand.

I got off of class today near Cleveland because the university didn't have power. A friend of mine in Columbus just came home because her university won't be open again until Thursday. 2 of the 3 major roads leading out of my hometown were blocked last night. It was a mess. There are even still a few places around here without power.

This.

For me? About as predictable as calm winds. :D

Still no power in Steinholme. I'll have to dig out my camp stove to cook dinner and put the contents of my refrigerator on ice.
