"We're in quite a bit of turbulence," Burrows told an air traffic controller. "Is there any chance you could give us some direction?"

The controller, based in Jacksonville, Fla., responded: "Looks like straight ahead is the best way out."

A short time later, the pilot radioed again, sounding a bit more frantic.

"We're getting a 2,000 foot (per minute) descent here," he said.

The controller asked the pilot if he wanted to turn around and reverse course, and he said, "Yes, sir."

Less than 30 seconds later, the pilot sounded panicked.

"We're in a mayday, mayday, mayday!" he said, his voice clearly in distress. "We're upside down! My God, hurry!"

The controller tried desperately to reach him again but could not.

An unidentified other pilot then radioed, "Center, you better scramble whatever you scramble because I think they hit the ground."

"We're going, sir."

Wow I just listened to it! Tragic!!! Main calls start at about 26:40. So my question is what happens afterwards. The controller obviously continues handel traffic Who call the first reponders, coast guard , EMS whom ever how does that occur?

The plane was over the Gulf. Local EMS providers as a rule do not perform helicopter response to offshore crashes or even to the rigs.. The rigs have contracted helo's.. and the Coast Guard is pretty much your sole source of govt run rescue out there. Local govt MAY be equipped to run boats offshore, but state waters are 3 miles offshore and closer, or in Texas, 12 miles offshore and closer.

Nearby boats and helo's may lend a hand searching..

As for who calls? The other ATC guys.. The primary controller stays on the radio with the emergency. His sup should be nearby/behind him coordinating. Someone else in tracon/center/tower is on the phone.
