Tell your congressman to make registration data private

There's a new aviation bill being introduced and I'm trying to get a directive added to it that will prevent the FAA from publishing our aircraft registration data. With ADSB being forced upon us, any nut job can track us in real time. There have been a few run-ins with some of the local anti-airplane loonies.

If the government published car ownership data with real-time tracking info, the public would be outraged. This is no different.

Please write your congressman and ask them to add it to the PLANE Act of 2019.

Yeah, how else am I going to be able to get a post card in the mail every month asking if I want to sell the plane?

The ADS-B data should be blocked. Except, when you cheap out on the code implementation, it makes it a whole lot more difficult/impossible to rectify.

Yes, and your address used to be published in the airman's registry with no option to opt out. That doesn't mean we can't push for that data to be private now, especially in light of mandated tracking capability.

None of you watch/read the news any more? There is no right to privacy, man. Like, Big Brother is watching, and so is the rest of the Internet, man.
 
Been there, fought that fight, lost. It will take someone's house being burglarized or some other serious crime, and a confession stating they used tracking from FlightAware, etc. Then, and only then will eyes open. Till then, trust me, your elected representative could care less.

Use email. That way it will cost you as much as it accomplishes — which is to say, nothing.
 
So, I actually TALKED with my congressmans staffer a few years back on one of the privatization bills. Had a long conversation where I outlined everything and wasn't just Rambly McRambleford. Staffer asked me to put it in writing. So I did. Evidently it was well written enough that my congressperson just COPY/PASTED what I wrote and used it as his argument to Congress to not pass the bill. It didn't pass. You all can thank me. So contacting them does work, but you gotta show some sort of effort beyond an email.

Good deal. Letting them know your thoughts is what elected people look for, it makes their job easier, or less difficult...

I have been working on starting a needed business in my area. My congressman (or I should say his field representative) has been very helpful in leading me in the right directions. Without their help I would have been mired down in red tape and paperwork a long time ago. It is always a good feeling when I get a phone call from the congressman's office and it isn't them returning my call.

Email elected critters. They might not get back to you but they do take notice.

Doesn't mean that it's right. I think if we use the car analogy that we can get our point across. Even the big brother and apathetic types would cringe at the thought of anyone being able to track their specific car at any time.

Yea we might have a 0.001% of getting this through, but if we do nothing then we have a 0% chance for the change.

I suppose there are competition things. Like why did company X's private jet visit X airfield? Maybe some competitor with more cash is trying to hurt them or buy some property / make a move first?

Its nobody's business that I go to the store the corner gas station my office or a buddy's house. Just like it's no one's business that I'm flying to airport X Y or Z.

If you want to tell everyone where you are 24/7 you do you. It's none of your where *I* am though.
 
So do you hide your license plate? I’m just curious how you hide your identity when you’re driving. I have nothing to hide, but that’s just me.

I can see the concern in that there is no website that you can enter your license plate and track you in real time. With ADSB, this is possible with airplanes. Yes, your car is tracked by cameras etc, but it's not publicly accessible.

Not so fast... what if you're buying fertilizer and diesel fuel, and your buddy's name is Al? Al Kayda? If you see something, say something. Unless you don't have anything nice to say. Then don't say anything. Damn, I'm so confused now. Are we supposed to hate airplanes because people can see us flying around, or because they can see where we were a few minutes ago if they know how to look? Or are we supposed to be all worked up over nothing because we sold our airplanes and now we're bored? Just stay off my lawn and we'll all get along just fine. Unless you're tying down for the night and you brought beer, in which case the grass is yours. (As long as it ain't Keystone Light.)

Go ahead and try to figure out the owner of a car just by having the license plate numbers ... see how far you can get without some kind of court order.

Please show me which website there is that tracks my license plate and my vehicle no matter where I go and shows it to everyone.

Also please show me which websites there is that you can punch in my license plate number and find out who I am.

I'll continue to wait while you compare apples to elephants.

The general public does not have access to license plate databases. I can’t read your plate and lookup who you are or where you live.

That’s the whole point to this conversation.

In NY, you go to your local PCT, ask them to run a plate, they will probably ask you for a reason. They will enter your request and personal. Information into the log book and run the plate, giving you the information. It’s public info, just not easily accessible.

They won’t in IL. If you ask, they will attempt to contact the owner on your behalf and will ask him/her for permission to release their info but they won’t do it without their consent.
 
You can still run an N number, but there is a way to block your N# from third party companies like Flight Aware and the like. Just follow the directions, email or snail mail the FAA. See below

You can block that no one sees it or make it accessible to only YOU. Again, from what I understand, the N# remains public in the FAA database, but you can opt out of tracking from ADS-B.

So you have to goto the police, identify yourself, give a reasonable need for the info and have your identity logged in a law enforcement database to get the info...

Ok. That’s a good starting place for aircraft registration data.
 
Okay, so folks can look up who you are and where you’re going. So again, what do you have to hide if you’re so worried about it.

It doesn't f****** matter where I'm going to the General Public. It's none of the Public's ******n business where I do or don't go. Maybe you should start posting on here every time you leave the house when you go to the store when you go to your grandmother's when you go to your kids when you go to every ******n place that you go and then when you start doing that okay then I can see where you're okay with everybody knowing what everybody else in the world is doing. Aslo post it on Facebook and Twitter and reddit and Instagram.


Why aren't you posting all your information on those sites? What are YOU hiding. You don't even use your name on here. Why not? What are you hiding?
 
I will intentionally keep this fairly cryptic. But will just say with the current publicly available information along with required unencrypted information transmitted from the aircraft, it would be relatively easy to target a specific N-number.
 
If someone wants your info badly enough, they can get it. That's just the price of the convenience and near infinite wealth of information we have with the internet now. I don't believe any bill that congress can pass will change that.

FOIA roster of FAA employees and their grades and steps. Cross match it with US pilots. Publish their names, salaries; then narrow the pool a bit, and start publishing that sub-set's flight info. Share the pain. . .
