iBazinga!
I will be in Estonia next month and have an afternoon to kill before work starts. Anyone ever been to that city and have some 'must see' suggestions?

I will be there for the solstice which is a big deal. There is a huge celebration that night that sounds like fun.

Of all the places I've been, Estonia is not on the list.

The old town section is quite nice, the town hall and square, but I'd go to Vilnius, Lithuania which has an even better one; great bars and restaurants. (shameless plug for my home country...):)

Vilnius is not an option. I have a couple of hours on one afternoon in Taillin and then I work for the next couple of days and then head straight home. I see some pictures of the town square and it looks like a photo op and a little shopping.

BTW Bill: Nope never been to Riga. I am supposed to be in St. Petersburg (the original not the one in Florida) later this year.

If you're going for the solstice, better bring a bottle of Excedrin and some Alka Seltzer. You'll need it, afterwards.

At first I was thinking said you were going to Elbonia, in which case I'd want to find out if they really do live entirely in mud and if Dilbert's company has a factory there. :)

Just fly western carriers and stay the hell off the soviet era crap with wings.

Well I always stay off of Soviet era crap. but I am flying Estonia Air from Stockholm to Taillinn and then onto Copenhagen. But Estonia air is an Euro-carrier flying Airbuses so I am not concerned.

It's been 10 years since I was there. Quite a collection of mothballed aircraft on the field then. And then some that should have been mothballed, but were still being used to carry passengers. One time I was glad I was riding LH.

Where are you staying. Not the Hotel Moscow, I hope. What a dump!

Amen.

Good plan.

Riga left me with positive impressions. Worth a trip at some point.

Many of the former eastern bloc airlines have done away with the Soviet crap. You probably see more of it in SE Asia and on some of the lesser known carriers. 'Course you're also likely to see goats and chickens on board, too.

Budapest has an outdoor air museum right near the airport terminal. Lots of aircraft on display (incl. a DC6 decked out as Malev). I didn't see any operating Soviet aircraft on the field, though.

If you don't bring home an AN-2 you're an idiot.

Chessy high culture in Estonia

[FONT=Lucida Grande, Verdana, Arial, sans-serif]Never underestimate the popularity of Depeche Mode in Eastern Europe. Largely ignored in the UK - where they are considered as synth-poppers who ignominiously refused to go away long after their shelf-life was up (ie. 1985) - the boys from Basildon are worshipped as rock Gods anywhere East of Berlin. That might help Westerners understand why Depeche Mode Baar exists
I think I need to visit this place later this month when I am in Estonia.

As it turns out I've spent 8 weeks in Tallinn working for the Eestee Raudtee (Estonian Railways). It's a great city to visit in and work in. There is a pretty neat marine museum at the gulf side entrance to the old city. And the night time partying in the square in the summer is fun. English was never a problem either. And Estonian women are without a doubt some of the most attractive in the world IMHO.
If you don't have a hotel yet, I recommend the Domina Il Marine. Walking distance from the old city and the ferry terminal and a very nice loft style hotel.

We flew Atlanta - Amsterdam - Helsinki- Tallinn. The last leg on a Estonia Air
Saab. Also I've flown Estonia Air 737's from Frankfurt to Tallinn. Great service.
Should you get into the interior of the country, Tartu is also a great city. A big university there and the home of the Red Air Force's biggest airbase in the country.
Of all the international work I've done it's by far the nicest place I've worked.
The only downside is the number of tourists that the cruise ships can put in the city at times.
