Let us not forget the SE China Sea, among other "awesome" spots 'round the globe.

Perhaps I would be remiss if I didn't add a big FU. In 2003 a few surfing buddies of mine were on a junket around Indo when they were intercepted. Allow me to mention the family I knew (with 10 yr old daughter and 12 yr old son) who where cast adrift in their Zodiac after being allowed to live when their 54' ketch was forcibly taken just offshore of Trinidad.

Oh yes, my own personal encounter: 600 nm south of Japan we got a zipper across the bow and a heave to...instead, we ran and made good.

It's funny, among commercial shipping it's always a push to be unarmed (don't know why). One company I worked for towing internationally had a "No Firearms" official policy, however, in the Operations Managers office (where you go and get your orders) there was a rack of SS Mossberg 12gauges and a couple cases of ammo, and if you felt that you should be armed, you could grab one or two and some ammo on the way out the door, and nobody would "notice" you walking through the office on the way to the boat.;) When we would haul similar cargos as that ship for US forces as I did for the Marines into Mogadishu (gotta love Somalia), when we were still a hundred some miles out, they would fly out a Colonel and a couple of teams with a helo, drop the CO and an a crew to set up Ma Deuce on the wheelhouse roof and then go land a couple of teams and the helo on the barge and set up some serious fire power. Jokingly I asked the Colonel, "Where the hell is my M-16?" "You know how to use one?" "Since I was 14 machining autoseers for AR-15s". He went out and came back with one for me. I said "Heck, this long here, I figured you'd all have the port secured by now." He said, "Hell, there is no such thing as secured over here, it's our allies that we have to guard this from."

Hopefully the Ruskies will nuke that hell hole.
 
Because some spineless yelly belly at Lloyds decided the acturial tables demonstrate a reduced liab w/o firearms. Of course the only time he steps out of the office is on holiday. And there's a whole gang of them....

I think arming merchant ships would be a good idea. And keep it under wraps until those scumbags get within range. Then, repel them with extreme prejudice. I believe it was one of our first presidents (Jefferson?) who said, "Millions for defense. Not one cent for tribute." And a million dollars was a lot of money back then.
 
Why not mate the laser guided/steerable tail feathers we bolted to the dumb bombs with great effect in Gulf War I to a large, solid metal dart, strap it to the local B-52, and drop it laser guided right down the smokestack? Keep doing this until the bottom of the ship is pierced. OK, the ship is sinking slowly time for the Pirates to get off. Tanks submerged in salt water? Oh, too bad. -Skip
