The '=' on a TAF has already been covered. On a METAR, IIRC, a '$' on the end means that the equipment is due for maintenance.

I went through the FAR/AIM 7-1-31 pages 845-854 and didn't see anything on the = or the $ for that matter. I did bookmark that link!

According to http://www.alaska.faa.gov/fai/afss/metar%20taf/metcont.htm, $ is the maintenance check indicator. I've seen that somewhere else, too.

Oh yes, AC 00-34A, Aviation Weather Services:

3.1.3.14.2.2 Maintenance Indicator
A maintenance indicator, $, is coded when an automated system detects maintenance is needed on the system

I remember I included this little tidbit in a ground school I conducted on weather.
