Survives the emergency landing. The takeoff? Not so much.

Car Slams Into Plane Taking Off From Freeway
NEEDLES (AP) ― The pilot of an experimental aircraft was taking off from a freeway where he'd made an emergency landing when a car slammed into the plane, ejecting and killing him, authorities said.

:hairraise: How much you wanna bet the pilot was no pilot?

Sigh.. Too many accidents the last couple weeks.

Well, there's not much information in the story, but either something went very hay-wire, or else this guy tried to take-off on a highway without proper assistance from law enforcement to block off the road. From the picture, it also appears that he departed "the wrong way", i.e. against the flow of traffic, greatly increasing the likelihood of encountering a car.

In any case, without knowing the full story, it's hard to identify who, but it seems clear that somebody stupid was involved here.

They never do.
ac . ci . dent
an undesirable or unfortunate happening that occurs unintentionally and usually results in harm, injury, damage, or loss; casualty; mishap: automobile accidents.

So he unintentionally took off after his emergency landing and he apparently unintentionally took off into traffic and unintentionally took of without law enforcement clearing traffic?

I think his death was unintentional, but the chain of events that lead to it was all intentional decisions. Hence, not an accident.

The notion of "accident" refers, of course, to the intention with respect to the outcome.

Somebody should submit this. It fully qualifies for a Darwin Award.

It doesn't work like that Scott--Sorry. Were you there? Is all of the above true?

I highly doubt the guy intended on dieing that day--it was an accident.

Nope he was apparently careless and reckless then he was intent on crashing at sometime due to his own stupidity. Since you were not there either your opinion is not worth anymore than mine.

So sorry you are not an expert on what his intentions were anymore than anyone else on this planet.

Okay..Scott.

I don't know his intentions, nor do you, but you can generally give most people the benefit of the doubt that they didn't intend on crashing their airplane and DIEING after surviving an emergency landing.

I've done my fair share of stupid **** that could have killed me. I'm sure most of us have. If it would have--it would have been an accident--as I wasn't trying to DIE.

+1+1+1+1

Scott's making the point that most "accidents" are preventable.
True. Most of it is preventable--almost all of it is preventable. There are plenty of people that die in preventable ways and many of thing without a doubt deserve the Darwin award they receive.

That said--I have a hard time not calling an unintentional airplane crash an accident.

It's a question of semantics. To some, an accident is something that occurs that was beyond the power of those involved to prevent, rather than just something that came out other than as intended.

So you're saying you have a hard time calling an intentional airplane crash an accident?

;)
Yes? An intentional crash is not an accident. An unintentional crash is an accident. It does not matter how stupid the cause.
