Statin?

Doc wants me to take a low dose statin due to family history and cholesterol level. He just put me through the whole test regime calcium score, stress test, ECG, etc and everything was good. My cholesterol was 90 something so he wants me to go on a low dose of statin.

Anything I should know from impacts to medical cert or “eat more vegetables instead of taking the drug” point of view?

Cholesterl was probably not 90. Possibly your LDL, or “bad chol” was 90. Still pretty good and depending on risk factors is at goal. That being said stains lower CV risk independent of chol lowering ability by lowering inflammation at the level of the arterial wall. Even every other day dosing will Lower CV risk and lower possible side effects. For most part, statins help ppl live longer!!

post the exact medication and dosage. Nothing else.

There are two Sr. AME's here that will see it and opine. No need to discuss your test results publicly.

Atorvastatin, but I don’t remember the dose. He sent it to the pharmacy and I haven’t picked it up yet.

He basically said what your last sentence says, “you don’t need it, but I think everyone should take it, and with your family history let’s get you on it. “

Do some research. The sad truth about statins and how they have been pushed upon us is borderline criminal. You need a new doctor.

I took the same statin for nearly 2 years, and while it lowered my cholestetol it also caused loss of cognitive function, muscle wasting, and all sorts of other problems. It took nearly a year of being off that crap for things to get to normal.

My cholesterol was very high. I lost weight, started drinking water instead of juice and soda and cut 90% of the sugar from my diet. Did just as well as the statin without the side effects.

Cholesterol isn’t what’s killing us, it’s sugar. Any doc still pushing statins isn’t a real doctor, just a pill pusher. (And I don’t give a rat’s gluteus maximus if I’m offending any doctors out there because they are part of the problem.) Just Google “the truth about statins” and do some reading and you will see.

Like any medication, Atorvastin (Lipitor) effects everyone differently. I have been on it for a long time without any side effects. Others I know not so much.

And what is your solution for a person with high cloesterol, who has a good diet and isn’t a fat ass?

I've been taking a statin for probably 25 years now, no big deal. My doc told me if they could put it in the water they would, it's supposedly that good. Be careful what you read on the internet, including here. But for what it's worth, for me it's been no big deal.

Read up on them, google away. Lots of studies showing they can’t show any significant decrease in heart disease by putting someone on statins. You may like your Dr and want to keep him, but you owe it to yourself to get a second opinion and some more homework before taking them.

Same situation, so I got a second opinion from an AME, two birds with one stone, and all that. He, too, said we should all pop them like candy. So I do, 10 mg per day around 1500, with my multi vitamin, fish oil, and 1k Vitamin C. I have not yet expired, the corresponding lab numbers went down, and no side effects I can directly attribute.

I had two detrimental side effects to Lipitor. Never again will I take statins. Then had the nuclear test and ekg with treadmill tests - did not show any issues. Doctor wanted to be absolutely sure so was hospitalized and had an Angie a gram or scope through an artery in my groin and had less than 10% blockage in one artery with none in the rest, doc said I will probably never have a heart issue from cholesterol even though my numbers are a bit elevated. Statins can cause problems in some people and may not be obvious for a couple of years.

I had (have) moderately high cholesterol levels, was put on statins about 10 years ago, completely lost my memory (at age 47), COMPLETELY.

Got off of them, memory returned to relatively normal w/i two weeks.

NEVER again, I would much rather live a shorter life than a mindless longer life.

Wow, this makes it clear as mud, don't it? LOL

...My doc told me if they could put it in the water they would...

When a medical professional believes that deeply in a pharmaceutical to essentially advocate medicating 100% of the population, that is definitely not an unbiased opinion.

He's a board certified cardiologist, he's seen the worst of the worst as far as arterial disease goes, so yes, I suppose you're correct. I've read a lot of the material opposed to statins and time and time again they read like chem trail conspiracies. I'll listen to my docs.

You can also google "the truth about vaccines" and find out how we are giving our kids autism, among other things. And that the world is cooling, or warming; your choice.

With all drugs there is a trade-off between effectiveness and toxicity ("side effects"). Do research ahead of time and don't hesitate to have a good conversation with your doc - and a second opinion - before starting them. Same applies to any bad effects after going on a drug.

I have seen even common blood pressure meds base elevated cholesterol, elevated liver tests, elevated a1c levels, and cognitive issues. And I've seen docs shrug their shoulders at such things and prescribe more drugs to counter the effect (rather than finding the optimal solution to the initial hypertension). It's all a trade-off.

From an FAA perspective statins are a non-issue. BP is, if high enough. Likewise diabetes and a1c.

Your doc is trying to follow national recommendations, based on large population studies - the problem is that each person reacts differently to each drug and drug regime, so you need to work hand-in-hand with your doc to get things right. If he/she won't do that, you need to get other medical opinions. And note the word opinion.

Actually there are really good studies showing heart disease reduction, reduction in stroke, and reduction in prostate disease.

People with high cholesterol levels and a inflammatory response tend to plaque more than others

Don't take it. The 'you don't need it, but I think everyone should take it' ought to tell you something.

Why wouldn't you stop taking them before complete memory loss? Did the loss happen overnight or something?
