As far as I know there isn't any set protocol set up in the regs. Most logbooks have a line on one of the first pages titled " book number" so you can note which book it is. For most folks it doesn't really matter but if you're planning on flying commercially it is...
You can keep track by the dates in the books so I'm guessing you don't need to have book numbers but it helps.
