At my Class III medical a couple of months ago, it was noted that I was hypothyroid (due to a history of head/neck radiation, so not a surprise). My AME had several conversations with Oklahoma about me, and the end result was that my AME issued me a Class III on the spot without restriction (other than corrective lenses). That certificate had a two year expiration since I am 69. About a week later I got a letter from the manager of the AMCD rescinding my Class III and instead issuing a new Class III under a Special Issuance authorization that is valid until 2026. The Special Issuance authorization requires that in two years when I renew the Class III, I also have to send records from my own doctor specifically updating them on the hypothyroid condition. Then they'll send the Class III. All fairly standard stuff as I understand it...first time in 50 years that I've had trouble with a medical certificate.

Anyway, my question.....now that I have a Special Issuance on my Class III, does that affect my ability to fly under Basic Med in the future if I elect not to get a Class III in two years when the current one expires?

Nope. You’re good to go with basic med. you just can’t have your last medical withdrawn, suspended or revoked. So once your current medical expires go see any doctor for your basicmed exam.

In fact, you might want to get your Basic Med now. The easiest time for a physician to sign Basic Med is while the ink is still damp on your class III.
